Hi all,

I've got a client how wants a Vista OS loaded on a new HDD that will boot their machine. The old HDD is un-recoverable/repairable (physical damage):( and therefore the OEM version is lost. The original repair disk will, of course, not reinstall Windows Vista. Scouring the net, I found this offer http://index-downloads.com/shop/item/331/. Thoughts? Has anyone of you bought software from this site? Thanks for your response in advance.

Why would the OEM version be lost? The licence is tied to the motherboard not the drive.
The COA should be on the case - at the worst all you'd have to do is get recovery disks.

What kind of computer is this?

MS don't need to provide disks. Any OEM Vista CD should be sufficient. If you have a Vista Retail CD it definitely will install and activate with any OEM key.

The Board is a MSI P6NGM NVIDIA MCP73 Series Chipset. I comes with a CD of Vista Drivers and Utilities and a Vista Product Recovery DVD.

As you know, the Recovery DVD cannot be used to reinstall Vista. Are you suggesting MS will provide OS disk(s) if I give them the COA on the case?

+1

And... if somehow you still need to buy an OS, why not talk him into 7 ;)

Yeah, I would prefer they take Win 7, but they don't want to shell out for a new OS. That's why I wondered about the $69.00 OEM copy that downloads from the website.

Vista has actually been a boon to my business since it incurs all kinds of problems for clients. I usually urge them to move on to 7, but am happy to help

You don't need to get the discs from Microsoft, you either need to use your own Vista disc, or if you have a technet subscription, you can download it.

Thanks for clearing that up. Should have joined technet along time ago. Cheers!

UPDATE: The cost for getting a technet subscription is a bit steep at the moment. I would like to know more from those of you who have got a subscription and how well it has been helpful to you.

I went ahead and got an OEM copy of Vista x64 and am using it for the reinstall.

Thanks again for your comments!
