I have a few questions i wanted to tackle before i get asked ... Regarding upgrading windows for a customer..

1.Is it best to obtain A licence from sites like amazon or Microsoft for windows 7 anytime upgrade? Do Techs/resellers get it at a better price somewhere? or is it pay the price of the upgrade and charge the client for the upgrading service you provide?

2. Client A has A Dell laptop and upgrades from vista to windows 7 via Purchase of windows 7 upgrade license... Then what if customer magically loses Hard drive with no backup.
With the new hard drive.. Is restore with restore disk to vista then upgrade again to win 7 the only Option?

I deal mainly with businesses and the service I provide is doing the work for them. They are less interested in whether they could get the software themselves. They just want someone who can get it done for them so for number 1 for it is often pay the price and charge my time.

As to question 2, yes if you have to reinstall you lose the upgrade. Pretty nasty but thats the way the cookie crumbles.

Yes, If the customer purchases the win 7 upgrade it needs to see the previous windows operating system (Vista)Keep the OEM number for vista safe. In the event of a HD failure, you can use any Vista oem disk to reinstall vista. (Product key will signify basic, home premium etc) them upgrade can be used again as it comes with its own product key. Hope this helps

You can always purchase the full oem version of Windows 7 and upgrade from it.
