Ok,
Just wanted to vent..........
It seems like every other computer I'm seeing of late has some type of update issue.
All different issues, some easy to fix, some not so easy.
So far, I have been lucky to get them all resolved, but come on MS.
I'm spending way too much time on these.
Most customers seem to be just avoiding the issues that pop up.

Diagnose hard drive failure. OK
Replace drive. OK
Remove viruses, etc. OK
Patch/Update programs. OK
Update windows.........pull my fricken hair out!

Rant over!

Thanks.

I've seen a ton of problems with the last round of updates. Particularly on Win8 machines, but not limited to them. Most common appears to be the updates are taking forever to install, which I suspect causes the customer to force the machine off, which is a domino effect ending in a corrupted install. For others, it is things not working right after the update. I've seen deleted desktop shortcuts, scrambling of AV installs, corrupted system restore, among other things. The calls always begin with "Ever since I installed some updates....."

Frustrating for them, but gave me a very profitable July.

So you want them to be seamless so you have no work? LOL!!!
No, I love the work.

But I hate trying to explain to the customer why I spent so much time (charged him), when I'm supposed to be the "expert".

Just spending too much time on an issue that end user doesn't understand. I have lots of other work that I can justify and make more money on.

Just wanted to vent.

Thanks.

On a second thought....

How is everyone justifying the amount of time charged when up against anything but, a simple fix. Some, I have spent more than an hour or two, until resolved.

AIO repair has been my savior, so far. One thing I did notice, is that they recommend running the fixes 2 times. I've seen this help in and particular picky computer. Never tried the 2 run approach, but will again! Newest versions seem to have improved quite a bit in their "checking" process. Great program.

Where I work, we tell them that scans, updates, installs, etc. are based on the speed of the PC, and that I can't control what type of PC they have and how long it takes on that type of PC (like dual core versus quad core). As the "expert" you can also speak in some generalizations that are "fuzzy" from a technician's point of view. (Like "we're at the mercy of the internet with updates, I can't make them go faster" is a line my boss likes to use.)

You could setup a WSUS server or setup a proxy server to cache updates if you wanted to make the process go faster, but this would only make sense if you have flat rate pricing (and could afford to jump through a hoop or two to get it working smoothly).

I will say that tweaking.com's AIO repair has worked for me before. I've worked on a few systems where windows updates broke and the Microsoft fixes weren't even working. Ran the windows update repair out of the AIO tool and it fixed a few of them.

Thanks OaksLabs,

I don't have a WSUS server setup, but do the updates via Zalman. Sometimes helps, but most of the time, they fail also.

I have been having update issues on my personal machines with windows 10 they refuse to install, tried everything i could think of including aio repair, some of the current windows 10 updates seem to cause stability issues i think i will just disable updates till they are properly tested.
