Windows movie maker alternative

Have a customer using this software, seems to be taking more time than they would like. They have plenty of hardware but would like a suggestion on a better software to use to edit and encode video..

they also will convert some video to avi file format as it is shot from camera in .mob and .mov format...

do you have any suggestions, customer would like to pay for a good alternative rather than a free one, sometimes they are editing/rendering 30Gb of video at one time..

I use to use Nero 8 a lot back in the day. Loved it. Never tried Nero 9 or 10. Anyways it's easy to use and has a lot of features. If 10 is similar to 8 then I would recommend it.
