Windows folders not refreshing after deletion in Explorer

I've had this problem across most releases of Windoz but I'm using 7 pro now. I'll create new folders, move folders, delete folders, rename folders, etc - all working in the right hand pane of explorer. The problem is that the left pane doesn't update. I'll refresh (in the right pane, can't do it in the left) and F5, that will take care of the right pane. I'll "close/minimize" the folder and close the parent folder and then reopen it and it still hasn't updated. The only way explorer seems to update is to close it and open a new instance of it.

IDK if this would happen if I tried to use another program like Explorer++, which might reveal where the issue lies. I'm not even sure what to search other than "explorer doesn't refresh".

I'm wondering if this may have anything to do with mapped drives as sometimes I will disconnect a mapped drive and it doesn't seem to go away, even though it is no longer connected. I can map a new drive but the old drive will still show. Seems to be a general explorer issue. I've heard that it can be linked to network adapters (driver related) as disabling them can stop this problem, but that doesn't help for people who use mapped drives.
