Windows easy transfer not so easy

I attempted to transfer the files from an XP computer onto an external hard drive. That seemed to go ok but when I try to load them onto the new Vista system, I browse for the folder where the files and settings I want to transfer are, and get the response "Please select a valid file where data can be restored from."

Is there a way to open the file on the harddrive? It has an extension of .MIG.

Thanks,

I tried that but it didn't work either. Luckily, I hadn't reformatted the drive on the old computer (thought that I had). I just hooked it up external and dragged and dropped the files.

Thanks

I would check that you used the right version of Easy Transfer, as there are various versions for XP to Vista, XP to 7 and Vista to 7.

I've used al of these with success in the past, although the original XP to Vista one isn't very reliable, and can take aaaggggeeeeeessss to complete.
