Had a virus removal the other day that was pretty straightforward. Did a full cleanup/update/etc with it as well, including D7's full Windows Repair stuff. Now, of note was that that phase did stall on the "ReRegister All DLLs" so I stopped that and ran the Tweaking.com's program.
Now, this machine had a custom video card with twin DVIs so I used an adapter to plug in my VGA cable. I have a specific memory of changing adapters from the one that is shaped "┌┘" to a straight one as the ┌┘ one was blocking the (onboard) audio jack. Because of this, I'm almost 100% sure that audio was working when I handed it back.
He called me today saying that he's not getting audio. He says he's got the speaker in the right (green) jack. So I connected remotely.
Device is fine in the devmgmt. Uninstalled it completely and reinstalled the Realtek drivers for it. No help.
I forget which step I was doing but the message came up the the Audio service wasn't running. Okay, off to Services.
Sure enough, Windows Audio was set to Automatic but not running. Told it to Start and got: "0x80040154 Class not registered"
I found one 'fix' online:
"Try going into regedit, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/Audiosrv
and in the DependOnService remove all entries except RpcSs and then restart your computer"
Tried that. No help so it's back the way it was with RpcSs, MMCSS, and AudioEndpointBuilder running.
Another page said to "turn on the Power service". Nope. Already running.
I've reimported the default services.
Oh, and it's a custom build, not a brand name. FWIW. And Win7 Home Premium x32.
So, left it for now. Told him that I'd be looking for some input from other techs but, unless something comes up, I'll be picking it up Monday and we may be looking at a reinstall. Once I have it back, I'll put it through a full SFC first.
Open to suggestions.
