We were talking about offering a Windows 8 special, upgrades for $99.00. Just wondering what everyone else was charging for up grades, I checked the other threads and didn't see any reference. Is that a fair price/too low?

we were thinking that it would

That could only work if they were doing that special promo from just recently buying a windows 7 PC.

99$ would be the labour I would charge on the install ... but the customer still needs to buy the licence.

Please please don't tell me you were planning on selling pirated software.

I should clarify ....

New Egg is posting the OEM version of windows 8 for 149.99

You will be paying probably around 120 ish for an upgrade licence to windows 8 without that upgrade deal they were offering.

I think upgrades to 8 Pro are $39.99 right now. $14.99 is the deal if you recently bought a Win7 PC....

Thanks for that .... had to plow through a very large amount of the 14.99 sites to see that.

Changes my view a little ... how many spaces do you have on your bench to run these upgrades?

Upgrade to Windows 8 for 39.99
Offer valid from October 26, 2012 until January 31, 2013 and is limited to five upgrade licenses per customer. To install Windows 8 Pro, customers must be running Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, or Windows 7. Pricing varies by region and each independent reseller, and it depends on a variety of specific factors including exchange rate, local taxes, duties, fees, local market conditions, and other pricing considerations. The actual price you pay may be more than the advertised price, because of these additional factors. Get the full details on our special offer."

I think what my colleague was trying to ask is if charging ~$60 ($99 - $40 for the upgrade licence) was too much, about right, or too little.

The thought was running around the shop about possibly doing a promotion based upon the release of Windows 8, and the potential of perhaps getting a little extra business.

tl;dr Is this a good idea? If so how much should be charged?

I am charging one hour onsite rate (what is yours) plus software of they drop it off at my office for vista and 7. So 100 plus 40 for software.

Also take in account that many machines will come in with virus infections or screwed up drivers or missing service packs and such. All of that stuff needs to be cleaned up and stabilized before you can do a Win 8 upgrade.

Might also need something like ram, since many computers running Vista may only have 1gb and really should have 2gb for win 8 (32 bit can be 1gb, but people will complain of sluggishness).

I always thought it was best to do a clean install of the os to avoid bringing over existing problems. But maybe I'm wrong. If you do a clean install I would charge more. If not, I think $100 is a nice 'get me in the door' price, but I would have the client pay for the software. In my opinion..

We have been runing the Windows 8 installed for only $99.

39.99 for the updgrage and $60 for the install. The people with Vista really like it, but no one so far has wanted to upgrad a windows 7 PC and I don't blame them. Where I am located in MI there is a lot of competition and a lack of people with money so we make it up in volume.

Same here. $39.99 for the upgrade and 60 for the install. We've sold 15 in the past 1.5 weeks with little effort.

I would only want to do clean installs and pull data from windows.old. Too many chances for an upgrade to go south.

Doesn't take long to use ninite for all the freebies I add. Updates are pretty heavy at the moment :(

$59 for the labor 24.95 MBAM Pro (Reseller) What ever the upgrade disk costs at the time.

PS Ninite has classic shell in it as well.
