Before the end of my day I wanted to see how many people are looking forward to the release of Windows 8 this Friday?

Do you Recommend it, Sell it, Love it, Hate it?

This can potentially stir up the pc business. I have actually read really good things about it.

What are your thoughts?

Yay! Monday is over!

What are *your* thoughts on it since you started this thread? (or did you already post it in one of the many other threads about Windows 8 already on TN?)

sorry 'bout that. we have our ups and downs here too. but I'm not sure what you were fishing for ... (give your own opinion plz, that's like starting a thread here asking for help and not posting the diagnostic steps you have taken so far - we get even MORE friendly 'round these parts when you do stuff like that!)

for the record - oh well, I might as well throw in my 2c since I didn't in one of the many other threads :) - I don't know enough about 8 to h8, except that I think Metro will be a huge flop, and forcing it on ppl is an even bigger mistake, especially in business environment.

I don't know enough about 8 to h8,

This should be a bumper sticker or on a tee shirt or something. I agree, I installed Win8 in a VM a couple of months ago . I've fired it up a couple of times but just can't get on board with it. With all the previous MS releases I couldn't wait to get in there check it out and see what's new. Win8 just doesn't seem that intuitive at first glance out the g8. <-----thumbup:

meh...

I can rel8 <-- bonus?

I've been tinkering with it in a VM for the past week or so. So far all I can say for sure is that those who are more into smartphone/tablet gui will love it. That is if they don't get frustrated trying to find out where everything got moved to. The rest will change it back to the legacy desktop and probably never know they left 7.

It could surely mean a boost in software revenue, especially if you got in on some pre-order deals form you vendor. Last I checked, there is no upgrade option (don't quote me yet) so that means interested clients will be needing professional data backup, install and data restore. That could mean a BIG jump in service revenue.

I have to say though, I put out some pre-order bait out and not a lot of bites yet. If MS hasn't grabbed their attention yet, theres not much I can do. I don't really see it as being a "must have" thing so i'm not looking to push it upon my clients.

No I do not recommend it. I will not sell it, I do hate it. The only business Win 8 will bring is more people going to Mac or wanting 7.

Looking forward to Windows 8 tablets breaking left and right and me fixing them left and right... :D

I think it is going to do great in the enterprise environment as a tablet/touchscreen. The desktop/laptop version will not catch on anytime soon.

This post to similar ones on here regarding asking techs their opinions about windows 8. Honestly, in my opinion, 8 is a touch capable OS. I will only use on the Surface or a touch all in one. Thats it. I will make a quick fast transition to it but I will wait. I love 7.

I suspect we are somewhere in the middle of watching Microsoft implode. They are in the process of making a massive execution error that will ultimately lead to massive layoffs and company-wide restructuring in the not too distant future.

This collapse process started several years ago when Microsoft ignored Apple's release of the iPhone. The collapse will likely culminate with this idiotic foray into the Windows 8 OS and the associated joke they call "hardware" (Nokia phones and the slate tablet). It seems to me that it's too little too late. There is going to be no game changer announcement for the market in coming days and weeks. Think about it. They have to move you & me from Android or iPhone to Nokia phones and the Slate tablet and Windows 8. You want to trade your Galaxy S3 or iPhone for a Nokia running Windows 8? Yeah. Right. The market will respond with a collective yawn. MS has a huge mountain to climb and they have nothing to gain traction with.

Unless MS brings something totally mind-blowing to the market this company is going to get whacked in half over the next 4 years. Mark my words.

I did an upgrade from 7 Pro to 8. I ran into a problem that caused a rollback to 7. It appears the upgrade didn't like either Security Essentials or my online backup tool. After i uninstalled both, the upgrade went smoothly.

The next problem I ran into was getting the metro tiles to link to Facebook (all other services connected fine). I spent over 2 hours working on that. It finally started working when I changed my Windows live password to match the facebook password. I don't know if changing the password forced an update of the windows live profile or what, but that was what finally got it to work for me.

Seriously? You had to match passwords? Should I open a pool for when you get pwnd?

I use random passwords on everything and 2 factor authentication when I can. If the Win 8 Metro app doesn't support it then I will not use it.

Meh. The metro apps suck. Even on a tablet for facebook I'd use a full browser. On a phone I'll use a facebook app but not on a PC.

That's one of the big issues I have with Windows 8, it implies you have to have a windows live account. AND, if you use windows live for your settings, that password is what you use to logon to the computer. The nice feature is that it will let you sync your settings across devices, but the security issues are a big problem.

Now, you can use a Local account, but the apps won't link to facebook, twitter, etc. Or, at least, I couldn't get it to link up when using a local account, perhaps there's another hidden setting somewhere?

Why is everyone talking so badly about Microsoft? I believe they are in the clear, this is what they needed! People like to move forward no matter what it is many will see it as a need to jump in with the crowd. Look at apple no matter how many generations of iPhone's come out people see the need to "upgrade" because they feel that they are being left behind.

There are many people here that are complaining but why? you can do EVERYTHING you can do on windows 7 in windows 8. Plus a couple of advantages that people will come to love.

1.) The search feature is amazing and I believe both us techs and end users will embrace this feature.

2.) Microsoft Security Essentials - have any of you tried infecting windows 8? I'm not saying it is invulnerable but try going onto malwareblacklist or malwaredomainlist I was very surprised with how well internet explorer chimes in also.

3.) The live tiles are going to be great. It is a bigger and better desktop which also keeps you updated.

4.) Have you guys Installed the real copy yet? I LOVE how it makes a Restore partition automatically while installing. (I think this is why Microsoft made it a little harder to get into recovery/safe mode).

5.) It is very efficient with the resources it consumes.

6.) It is just overall faster and more snappy.

Don't take this post personally. I'm just saying give it a chance find the things you do like because in the end we are going to be fixing the problems that come along with it just like any other OS that has ever been released.

Dam what is up with all the MS haters here???? I for one hope they make it...

I don't hate Microsoft. I think Windows 7 is a great, solid OS. So was XP. I do think Microsoft has a bad habit of severely screwing up every other OS and 8 is no exception. I think they should just keep 7, maybe come out with another SP about the end of the year and ride it out for a few. Win8 was un-needed and by most unwanted as well. Normally when a new OS comes out I'm all about digging into it and learning as much as I can about how to work with it and fix it well in advance of its release. Not with Win8. I have played with it off and on for several months now and hate it every time I boot into it. The only thing I want to do is wipe it and install 7 or Linux, or anything halfway usable.

+1 ..... I just have not found any real reason to use Win 8 but I have tested it. I do not care for it at all.

Love it or hate it, it's coming anyway. Assuming you want to stay in this business, you need to figure it out.

It sure seems cumbersome on a regular PC. In my VM, the bump-the-corners trick to bring up the menu or charm bar doesn't work reliably. So, for example just to shut the machine off, you have to Winkey+C to bring up the charm bar, click on settings, click on the power button, select shutdown and click ok.

So much has been moved that it is a constant game of go fish. This is what I see as the biggest need my customers will have - "How do I _______?"

I'm making a list of keyboard shortcuts, installing and uninstalling software, things like that. I haven't tried removing an infection yet, in fact, I haven't yet found out how to access the embedded version of MSSE. What about installing other AV solutions?

So far, I've told those who have asked not to be the first one in line - other than that, the jury is still out.
