Windows 8, anyone like?

Should try it before make a such comment, everyone who have try it will tell you it boot faster and if shutdown faster too; Windows 8 saves the system state and memory on disk, so it just load it instead of make a full reboot. It's like if it will be in hibernation, it'S why also no shutdown menu very accessible, Microsoft expect peoples will just let Windows go in hibernation instead of shutdown. Ready a little bit about new OS help to understand

I have been trying it for almost a year now. Or ever since anyone could get their hands on it.

I agree, one thing I liked about XP and 7 both was they were completely usable right out of the box (with drivers of course). When Vista first came out, you had to change a few settings before it was usable, and now with 8 you have to hack it... no fun...

As for booting faster, I agree! it really, really does! But it seems they went backward on the superfetch idea, cause although it boots faster, seems to take forever to launch a program. Not a good trade off if you ask me, I would rather wait a minute or two more first thing and not have any issues the rest of the day than have to wait a minute or two everytime I close and relaunch a program. And I close and relaunch alot, I don't like things running in the background that don't need to be... Not saying I like superfetch either, but at least it made sense....

There you are flat wrong. There are already benchmarks to prove that it is faster. And the reasons are simple. They removed alot of bloat like areo that is cool to look at but takes considerably more time to run and load. This OS was designed to run on tablets with obvious minimal hardware needs so much eye candy was scraped to make it work.

Now I do agree with you about the registry hack.
 
Registry hack, lol I use it without hacking or installing what ever third party software.

I wonder how many peoples in this tread actually use it for real, I have the final release install on my main PC since August 15th, and it's not an old spare pc, I have a i7 2600k with 16 GB of RAM and the OS is on a WD 750 GB Black drive cached on a Intel 40 gb SSD with Intel RST , so it's Dam quick, since few software are not yet updated for Windows 8 my Workstation is still on Windows 7.

It isn't just Aero that was changed. Much of the OS was tuned up to get better performance.

If you are not seeing a performance increase, drivers are likely to be the issue. Which surprise has always been the case when Redmond throws out a new OS.
 
Well, like it or not, Windows 8 releases on October 26th.

So get ready to start working on virus infected Windows 8 machines on October 27th. I know I am.

I installed the consumer preview on an Alienware M17x R2.

Lasted exactly 10 mintues (how long I said I'd have it on at least) and the recovery discs were already loading.

I'm planning on putting it on my old laptop.

Honestly the interface is pretty neat once you get used to it. The server interface is amazing.
 
It's not really surprising on why Microsoft have introduced Apps and a touch based GUI, they are simply playing catch up. Sales of desktops are falling while laptops and tablets are increasing so the focus has to be on mobile platforms.

Like some of the others on here I have found Windows 8 (on a desktop) to be really enjoyable. It's really fast, 5 seconds from cold to using the desktop on a 4 year old machine, programs do react quicker too although some apps stall a bit but I do have crappy Internet speeds. Skydrive is superb, great application.
It's a shame that the built-in security for Windows 8 Pro isn't included for Windows 8 (Home) as that would have cut down on malware infections significantly.

There is a lot to like in Windows 8, some of it has already been done elsewhere but the more I use it the better it gets. I don't have the time to list all my likes and hates about it but I reckon it will actually do quite well. Businesses I'm sure will take to the tablets, having Office, Exchange and joining domains will be a big plus.

We'll see in due course.
 
MS just put this out so they can put out their "Surface" tablet and people who buy a new PC will see the same interface and think "Hey, I should buy a Surface !". :rolleyes:

I think Windows 8 will be replaced very quickly with Windows 2013 or Windows 9.

Yeah, Its just like when they beta tested Windows 7 on the public for a while and called it Windows Vista.
