Windows 7 only boots into normal mode. (NOT safe mode)

Hey guys. I have an interesting one.

Unit is free of infection but only boots into Normal mode. Safe mode (inc command prompt) freezes after classpnp.sys.

I attempted rebuilding the bcd and fixboot, etc, but it did not resolve the issue.

Any ideas on this? Software to diagnose only safe mode issues or reg repair files?

Windows 7 64 bit.

Have you tried booting off a Win7 64 DVD and getting into either repair or CMD and poking around that way ?

Anything in the event logs? Are you doing this with boot log? Both might give more clues as to what is hanging.

Actually, I only attempted a quick /fixboot and /fixmbr. I didn't do the full fledged bcd repair. I just attempted it, and realized I couldn't chang to c:\boot. Upon further inspection, C:\boot is MISSING.

2 Questions. How can Windows still boot normally, and what can I use to replace those files?

As far as not being able to boot into safe mode, give D7's "safe mode services" under the Windows repair tab a shot.

I tried it, but now it just reboots the pc at the spot it froze. It has to have something to do with no c:\boot folder I believe

What did you use to check for malware?

Malware bytes, super antispyware and hitman pro (also Kaspersky rootkit scan)

Ive had this problem before, usually fixed it by running chkdsk /r
