I have an HP laptop/ 8.1 in the shop. Clients wants (and tried themselves first) to upgrade to Windows 10. I can click on the upgrade icon, runs for maybe 1/2 hour, then fails - I am getting an error code of C0000005.

Ran tweaking tool in an attempt to repair corrupted files, after completion still no update sucess. Tried refreshing files, (Win 8 tool) file refresh will not run.

I'm thinking of reinstalling Win 8, but I want to do that as a last ditch effort, as there are several user programs on here that I don't want to have to go through setting up again unless absolutely necessary. Google shows little helpful info. on error C0000005.

Anyone run across this one before?

This pc turned out to be a mess right from the start. Don't know if the repeated upgrade attempts by the client hosed the system, but there were random HP popups that "HP Messenger" service/ other has stopped working. System restore/refresh would not work. Tweaking tool would not fix it. Malware scans came back clean...

In the end, I backed up data & did a factory recovery. After the recovery, upon reboot the pc popped up with a Win 10 upgrade offer. I clicked yes to that, 3 - 4 hours later it was complete, all seems to be running well.

(FYI - turn off sleep mode/hard drive sleep or the system will keep shutting down during the upgrade) Most of you know that, just wanted to mention it anyway. ;)

I haven't had a chance to poke around the system that much yet, but it seems like just a lot of eye candy to me. The little I have used it, it doesn't seem any snappier to me...

At that point I would have done a clean install of 10. (not an upgrade) I would have backed the SWSETUP folder from it when I backed up user data just in case I needed some win 8 drivers.
