Wife not happy about porn sites

Thanks for all the input guys! This was obviously just about me sharing a story, and I had no issue with what I did. I was probably more uncomfortable being so knowledgeable about pornhub! She actually wanted to look at the site to see that it was just "Man & Woman" sex! She was obviously a little uncomfortable and then said "geez i wish you were a woman"

I got paid and she got what she wanted... and I didnt drop the husband in it too much. funny thing is that they are getting a new PC. The husband is going to call me out to transfer his files over, and the wife will then call me back to put the website filter back on!! Winx2!

Great - as you said, Winx2! I have a feeling you'll be called out a few more times in relation to that customer...

I ALWAYS refuse work on jeleous couples who want me to install blockers/spy software on their computers.

First and foremost there might be legal implications. For example, I am not a certified P.I., nor do I know if the customer is the legal owner of the computer. Sure there is no real harm done if say for example the husband is the owner of the computer and the wife is just bringing it in for service. But how do I know that the computer is legally the property of the person bringing it in.

Next, I don't need the guy/gal being targeted knocking on my door saying that I ruined his/her marriage. Sorry, not my interest.

*brr* This kind of stuff gives me chills. Seriously, it's just pornography- if your husband/wife feels the need for porn and you don't like it, then maybe you should be doing your job as a husband/wife a little better.

How do you know that in regard to any computer that comes into the shop?

Not sure I understand the legal ramifications you are referring to. Could you clarify what you see as the risks in doing this kind of work?

Simply put, you don't know for sure.

But the biggest legal issue I think at risk here would be "unwarranted wiretapping"

Personally I won't do any snooping for a client and I flat out tell them "I don't do that kind of work because it puts me in a difficult position". There is no law that says I cannot refuse to do a certain kind of work. They can find the next guy down the block to do it.

I once had a customer who called me out to help him "organise" his computer. Turned out he wanted me to show him how to download his porn from the net into organised folders.
I did the job and charged accordingly but have avoided his calls since. I was a little too uncomfortable to make it a regular thing

that seems like it would be slightly less awkward to do via remote.

Usually don't like to talk about my client's on here, but yesterday I had lady drop off a laptop that her husband infected from looking at porn...The kicker: he openly admitted it to her! Needless to say they're in a bit of a fight. I just smiled and told her I'd take care of it! When she left I couldn't help but laugh...poor guy.

Older feller in the store this week, he says (and I quote) "My daughter told me if I looked up porn I'd get viruses but -- I wasn't looking it up, I was just investigating it" :D

These are the clients that make my job worth it!

i once had a client with a failing hard drive - he wanted to save his data before it died completely

i offered to go through folder-by-folder and pick what was important and needed to be saved and what could safely be left behind

he said just copy everything - i remember he said that a couple times

but i insisted - cuz i "knew" better

its sooo not worth it to get EVERYthing, just the stuff you need - you know, so many system files etc that don't need to be caught up in the dragnet - so i thought i was doing the guy a favor and going "the extra mile" and doing a really good job for him

well, he had gay porn on there!

oops!

alright... just copy everything!lol

(now i understood his male "roommate")

I recently had a customer ask me about why there was some porn images on the computer. I'm not sure where those files were located (temp internet folder or elsewhere). She thought it was a family member who downloaded it. I explained that sometimes viruses download adult content. I also explained that sometimes you can do a search query for something very benign (such as "gardening tips"), click some of the search results and get carted off to all sorts of unrelated pages including sites with adult content or pages that try to install viruses on the computer. I explained that it's almost impossible to surf the internet without accidentally stumbling upon adult content at some point.

how do you know for sure that the woman was the man's wife and that she had the authority to bring the computer to you in the first place?
As repair techs it's NOT our job to act as police officers. If someone brings me a computer I have every reason to believe that it's their computer or they are authorized to bring it in on behalf of someone else, unless they flat out tell me "I stole this computer" or something to that effect.

Am i the only one who couldnt care less if a client looks at porn or not.

Whsat they look at in their own home aslong as not anything illegal upto them. have had many clients openly admit to catching virus or have porn on their computer.

Personally only difference makes to me is you then know to bring out your own keyboard and mouse to use :D

your not, i couldnt care less either, i get 2 extremes of people when their systems come in, crippled with virus'! one set that say 'i dont know were these virus' have come from i only check my emails on it' and as u clean the temp files and cookies you see 100s of porn cookies flash past (not looking at their history tho!) i get the others that come in and say 'can you clean that...all i use it for is porn so theres nothing on there i want to keep!'
funny trying to keep a straight face either way!
