Why Apply for the Job?

As noted in another thread I posted earlier, we've found ourselves short staffed and needing a new hire.

We've posted in our local job bank (locally and for our Province of BC).

Our job description is VERY specific. We are small, we are independent, we are located and service a small geographic area (West Coast of BC, Canada).

So why would someone from the Philippines or from India send in their resume for an entry level job. They aren't relocating from INDIA to come work for me. "Oh sure, fly out for an interview and we'll see"?

I understand, people are struggling to find employment and make ends meet. But surely, they must see the futility in sending out what must be thousands of resumes to small mom-and-pop shops... mustn't they?

We will get dozens and dozens of wonderful resumes from people that are on the other side of the Country. And no, their cover letters do not say, "hey, my family was already moving from Jamaica (I picked a resume at random and seriously, that is where she is) and I'd love to come work for you."

Does anyone else have this happen when you post a job vacancy?

Happens all the time in the assistive care medical field (e.g. home health CNAs). When a job is posted, they get flooded with out-of-country applicants looking for a job so they can enter the country legally.

I am currently trying to hire, same as you small independent mom and pop and I'm getting them from all over. That ones that really make me shake my head are the ones that are currently employed. Why on gods green earth would some one who lives in California with a full time job apply for a part time shop tech position in NH???

I have had a customer get ransom ware lock all their files by opening a resume from someone overseas.
I would delete, not worth the risk.
Had to remove virus and delete all affected files. Luckily they had a backup of important docs.

There have been scams also where 'employment agents' abroad charge those foreign applicants a fee for finding hot job prospects.

My largest client had a job opening for their in-house IT/graphics/marketing person (yeah, quite a combo job description).
HR wanted me to review the resumes, and be involved with the interviews.

The amount of incoming resumes from overseas (mostly India) was insane!
All canned/generic resume formats.

The best is when I get an experienced data recovery tech apply and says that he is looking to get paid about 1/3 my annual revenues + a percentage of each job + revenue sharing.

Do you often get guys that come in to apply that are totally unqualified for the job that seem to be doing it because they are on unemployment? I believe you have to show your are applying for a certain amount of jobs per week to keep getting benefits.

Anyways we had one guy come in & say he saw the job & as long as he doesn't have to use email or the phone he would like the job. His resume went straight in the trash.

We have a quota system here for those on unemployment benefits. They are required to apply for x number of jobs each fortnight. Occasionally the department will follow up on one or more of the listed jobs to check the person is *actually* applying for jobs. I presume a similar system is in place elsewhere.

Heyyy you're in the same province/city as me!

We should complain about realestate prices or something some time.

Sometimes I just want to respond honestly to them about why Im not interested in them or why with in 3 seconds of walking in for the interview I already knew I wouldn't hire them.

Hey Bill, thanks for applying but I have already disqualified you because you can't follow the simple instructions in the posting.

John, thanks for coming by to the interview. Next time pull your pants up, sit up straight and don't trash your last boss and you might have a chance.

Franky, while I could over look the grammar mistakes I can't over look that you put HEY HIRING MANAGER as the only line in your cover letter.

Sorry for the rant, after a month of looking Im over it.

I interviewed a 1st year University student for a summer position (Mayish to end of August)... abundantly clear he knew nothing, let alone possess any IT knowledge.

So I asked him, "what level of compensation are you looking for?"

Kid: "$35000 for the summer, but you need to know that I need 2 weeks in July for a vacation and I need the last two weeks of August because I need to prepare for school."

Wouldn't we all like that?

gawd!
