In many threads, we have talked (typed) about backing up the clients hard disk before we perform certain tasks.
I agree totally.
My question is which software is being used?
We need something fast because the clock is ticking when on-site and we want software that can reliably restore the image just in case the unmentionable happens.
Thanks everyone.

good ole copy-and-paste!

its probably gonna take you more time to install the new software and configure it than it would be to just ask the client what is important to them get right to work xfering data!

if they've got multiple logins, that's gonna suck - you gotta find the teenage daughter's music files and pictures, teh dad's QB files, mom's email - ugh!

also, if anybody has passwords on their logins... more work for you!

hey.. big jobs take a lot of time, require your expertise - and they're paying for your time

what? you don't want to get paid??

be happy! you got a big job ahead of you! you're gonna make money today!

(now be honest... are you one of those types that thinks the words "money" and "profit" are...... EVIL? if that's the case, you and me arent' gonna see eye-to-eye - i'll just tell you right now.... haha)

and no... you're not gonna find "fast" reimaging software - that's gonna take time

just no way around that - its a fact of life

just do this: fix the problem!

don't wipe the HD and reinstall windows (preferred method)

also.. have a lil faith in yourself!

c'mon bro, you can do this without having the roof fall down around your shoulders!!

as a *last* resort, bkp their data, pop in the orig CDs, repartition/reformat/reinstall... etc (not a happy day - not good joo-joo --- but sometimes necessary)

Just ghost it or image with acronis. It shouldn't take more that 15 to 30 minutes if you do it from a boot disk. If the customers pc is really slow, use another but faster pc and slave the drive.

I *do* have faith in myself.
But, I am conservative by nature and believe in 'insurance' (which is one of the ways that I look at the backup).

I've used clonezilla for years with zero issues.

Open source, does linux/windows and is pretty straightforward.

Clonezilla is open source, but for acronis and most software, beware that you need one license per machine that it's used on. I can't justify $40 for other shareware (not sure about acronis) simply to back up a machine.

I haven't found any affordable, per technician or blanket licenses, where the software supports restoring images to smaller drives.

When I get time, I'll be checking out imagex from microsoft. It's free, and does file by file (not sector by sector) backups, so I can restore it to either larger or smaller hard drives.

I use acronis and have never had an issue with it. It usually clones a drive in less than 20 minutes, of course depending on the size and condition of the drive.
