What's your favourite line of computer repair

MacBook Air LCD replacement with the 4 sheets of plastic that have to be put back in order and if they slip down it won't look right.

Those are my favorites.

Mine would have to be motherboad repairs. I have always excelled at board level repairs. Now some has made this a piece of cake.
..
Secondary is recapping. I have a state agency the loves the iMac G5 series - she used to take them into the local "Genius" support center who would more often than not tell her the system was undesirable/ unrecoverable. An Intel exec told her at some function that he had an older tech that they (Intel) called in for those crazy board level issues that drove their techs crazy. Gave her my number - I at first told her I am Not fond of not do I do apple stuff.
..
Sent her to an Apple tech, who later called me and told me her problems were motherboard related - not just an over simplistic view of apple software issues.
..went in and looked at first machine - wouldn't boot and was stuck in eternal "booting" - opened it up and found numerous failed caps. $65 later and w5 minutes and it was booting like a race car... She was impressed and showed me two more - one had same issue, the other had a dead UART. Fixed the cap problem, took the dead UART problem to the shop - had to order the UART (Only Apple uses that UART - but my contact at Intel sent me a dozen "improved versions" of that chipset. When I got them, I installed four of them, the machine booted right up - I mean snap your fingers boot!. Charged her $95... She was ecstatic!
...
Now for some reason all these managers are calling me and relating to her telling them I can fix anything - keep telling them this isn't true ( and have looked at a dozen basket cases that proofs it).
...
Yea I would have to say board level repairs.
...

I don't really like any type of "computer repair"...we really focus on business, not residential. Troubleshooting weird computer issues is a time sink...and something you don't really get to charge for every minute.

My favorite line of "IT Work".....is implementing new/bigger things for clients.
One example, already mentioned by someone early on in this thread...taking a business with a little peer to peer network..and upgrading it to a good server based network. Like moving a business from residential pop/imap e-mail, to proper business grade e-mail, in the old days, with Small Business Server. Lately, Office 365, and an Essentials server or server with Essentials Role. Showing them the cool things they can do with a good business grade e-mail system, like public folders, distribution groups, external contacts, aliases, etc. And the other perks..letting them remote in via the Remote portal. Or outside file sync with DattoDrive.

Introducing a nice new server cabinet with rack mounts...upgrading servers, virtualizing servers...love those!

But lately I'm trying to focus on wireless networks, including outside...like marinas, campgrounds, and long distance shots like the 6 mile one over water I did last year.

My favorite is any install with a close friend/coworker. My least favorite is working on ancient servers. 2008 r2 is next on my hit list.

"I love inheriting a previous tech's work and getting the client back on track to where they need to be. Definitely reminds me how great this IT work can be."
Big smile here.
I have no idea how you like this. I hate trying to fix someone mess.

That work yields high profit for me. They tried going the cheap route and crap hit the fan. Now they want a proper solution and I am willing to offer but with my recommendations. Obviously if they are a cheap client I don't wanna deal with them.

Also gives me a chance to start fresh with their needs.

I like being the one to fix someone else's mess. It fills me with pride. I also like interesting jobs that I can take back to my workshop to puzzle over.

Makes a change from "It was fine until my son and his friends borrowed it to play a game they'd got from somewhere..."

I actually love hardware troubleshooting and just general problem solving. Figuring out why a computer is doing what it is or isn't supposed to be doing.
