Finally installed windows 8..

I figured it out in about 5 minutes tops, configured my other 3 monitors, surfed to technibble, changed my resolution and disabled UAC.

So far...honestly its not that bad, have to get used to the start screen, but even then I don't see a huge difference. I typically don't use the start menu that much anyways since I pin my most used programs on the task bar.

And FINALLY, windows has separate task bars built into windows now. No need for a custom program to do that.

my 2 cents :).

I had to look up where to find the shutdown button :p

Other than that and a few quirks with metro I'm liking Windows 8. The new task manager is awesome, Microsoft should have done that years ago.

Well that's good news that a computer tech with 13 years experience can figure out Windows 8. LOL

I can't think of even one of my customers out of the last dozen that could have "configured my other 3 monitors, surfed to technibble, changed my resolution and disabled UAC." Even in Windows XP/Vista/7. Ok maybe surf to Technibble, but that's not guaranteed.

Not to mention pinning programs to the task bar (on purpose) or caring about changes to the task manager.

Win 8's popularity will have less to do with whether or not WE can figure it out, but rather if our average customers can figure it out with little to no assistance.

I think the jury is still out on that.

haha, my comments were directed towards other techs who couldn't figure it out. Not customers, im not that ignorant to think regular consumers would figure it out that quick.

And I was talking about the task bar :). task manager is pretty sweet though.

In my opinion, I think it will do just find in the market.

Hummmmm I made harsh comments about Windows 8 not because I don't know how to use it, I use it more than 5 minutes I have it since a year now. Me comment was about stupid annoyance stuff in Windows 8 that customers will have hard time with.

I have not a single problem with Windows 8 personally for now my main PC is with the final release ( TechNet) but my Workstation is still on Windows 8 , the one with accounting, commit, and other business applications is still under 7

The shutdown button; do I care my PCs work 24/7 , especially in winter, they produce enough heat , I don't need to heat the room.

Start page with Metro Crap; well I never go there, all those Metro application are crap, I use only the desktop.

The most annoying thing is to redirect the application a files open with something more useful than this metro crap photo viewer as example. Once you made the turn of 20 to 30 different extensions it's start to be more enjoyable.

I don't like it. The improvements that it makes (and it does make quite a few) still aren't worth fooling with the other junk for me. I run it in a VM and that's it, and only so that I can get used to it and test my software for use on customers' machines.

I have been advising clients to avoid it and probably wait for Windows 9.

As a tech I don't think Win8 is too hard, I think its just more stupid GUI redesigning to confuse end users and remove things from their reach.

Somebody is going to come up with a program that is a one-button fix to turn Windows 8 into something that looks like Windows 7 and it will sell like hotcakes.

Yup, and I will be loving it!

You have few of them that bring back some kind of start menu, I test all of them, but they cause more trouble than they solve.

So count up the number of clicks/wipes it takes to join it to a domain vs what you do now and get back to me.... and that's just one example.

Win8 is crap plain and simple. It is definitely following MS's release pattern of good, crapware, good, crapware, good that they've used since 3.1

Speaking of Domain, they redesign the admin interface of Server 2012 with the same Metro Crap. the one of SBS 2011 was easy and simple to use

I know this thread is a few days old but, im actually excited for it. If already before the final build and any service packs it scores slightly higher then windows 7 in benchmarks that's a win for me. Also if developers actually start working more on windows phone, the integration between Windows 8 and Windows phone 8 could be pretty awesome. They are built off of the same kernel so apps on your phone are synced up and on your pc. Sure they changed some things they probably shouldn't have but it might work out better then what people are making it out to be.

A lot of people acted like windows 8 was hard. So many videos showing "first time reactions".

Yet when 8 finished installing, it showed people exactly how to use it.

If you think about it, its actually really smart on Microsofts part.

Some of you dont like it because you will always be apple fanboys...I get it, its cool.

But think about it, the have created a cross platform option that will cross between their phones, tablets, desktops, and laptops. Once it hits mainstream there will be so many people making tiles, apps, etc. People will want to be able to do what they do on a computer on their phone or tablet. It makes perfect sense.

It's still new, just as xp was once new, vista was turned into 7, it will work out the kinks.

If this works the way I hope it does, I would have no problems using a windows phone 8 instead of android.

Actually it took me one more click to add it to a domain, not too bad.

My Windows 8 Review

Intro:
I have installed windows 8 12 times since the developer preview.

My mother and Girlfriend were the first to be my subjects to see how non tech savy people can use windows 8.

My brother is semi tech savy, he was next.

Another client who was having laptop issues was a third. and another Tech friend was a fourth.

Brother and tech friend did not like the windows 8 setup.

My girlfriend and mother have grown use to windows 8. My mom loves windows 8 for the games and the apps. It serves her a purpose of opening up the simple card games, and other apps that has been released.

My girlfriend finds it redundant with the new internet explorer introduced, and the shutdown button. That was quite confusing for her. However, I believe once she learns about the app store, she will love it not only for her but for our son as well who is currently 5 years old. He has a thing for fruit ninja, and other simple games such as that.

My brother stated he did not care for it, I can not recall the reason as to why. I think its the Metro UI start page that he did not like. His use of a pc is mainly internet scrolling, emailing and things of that sort.

My tech friend didn't care for it because it did not work that well on her pc. She likes to play WOW as I think there were issues from that end as well.

One of my most recent clients, He said he would love to give it a try. He loves the look of the interface etc etc. He is a semi tech savy person (hardware side) of windows. His wife also owns a macbook.

My Friend amanda whom I just intalled Windows 8 RTM. Her response "I'm in love". As of 7am yesterday and 12hrs later, She has enjoyed the windows 8 setup. This is running on a 1.5ghz netbook with 3gb of ram.
With her setup, I am waiting on the performance review, to see how well it works and serves her specific needs.

My Own Thoughts and Uses
I use the pc mainly for Photo editing, social networking, emailing and of course computer repair business.

All my programs seems to work perfect on the windows 8 machine.
I love the new start menu, I love the Metro Ui, the drop down menu is very intuitive for me to click and get to where I need.

The new features:
The mounting an ISO.. I love they finally implemented this simple feature with windows explorer it is very very useful for me when I download new iso files or create iso files from discs.

The New Taskbar:
I've yet to set up dual monitors, I do use this quite often. It will be interesting to see how well this works out.

The App Store:
I'M IN LOVE WITH some of the apps that I never heard of such as PC Monitor, iheartapp radio, disk falcon and a few others for weather, email, calendar especially the calendar one.
The email, messaging, and people app could use ALOT OF WORK. I think it has great protential for the social networker and the RSS Feed person. Hopefully this will be tweaked or new apps/software will be created based off of this.

Using Windows Live to login.
This I like, but it could use great improvement, I think with windows easy transfer and the syncrhoization it offers. It can prove to be great with new setup pc for specific users. I have yet to learn how to slipstream a disc properly so when I do load it up, My programs of Adobe Master Collection and others are already installed. However, I feel that slip streaming is unnecessary these days since Software is updated so fast. Leaving me on the teeter totter of my preference.

The synchronization does seem to be nice tho.

I love the F8 settings minus a few (See cons)
I like how i can refresh wiping it clean of files and programs or refresh with keeping the files.

The Cons:
Hp has yet to release proper printer driver and software releases for windows 8 while others are on board (Logitech, Wacom tablet) etc etc.

I'm not sure, but I am hoping some of the boot with hitting f8 functions have returned such as
last known good config. this would be great.

Summary
Overall, I think this will prove to be a wonderful Operating System,

If the Metro user interface is that much of a bother with individuals, I am glad that there is way to disable this feature. I think it should be implemented into the operating system without the use of third party software. As this way I could easily show my clients if you do not like this, there is this function here that allows you to switch back and forth.

With the new functions, the new app store. I think windows 8 will have alot to bring to the table in Unity Operating Systems. I am looking forward to seeing if Linux builders will not get on board with creating a Unity Os not just for the pc. But smartphones and tablets alike with the hopes of getting its live disc boot speed back up to par.

Client Side Summary:
Every person I have installed it for, has grown use to it, and has fell in love with Windows 8 minus my brother and tech friend.

Sincerely
Eric Beadle DBA E.TekCustom

My main issue with Microsoft's entire Windows product line is that they continually "innovate" (aka copy what other OSes have had for years).

Instead of making up "new" things or replacing features altogether, I would much rather them actually fix what is wrong with their software in the first place instead of making a few tweaks and new design dressings on the same things that are still broken.

Basically, if your wheel is a square, you don't paint the wheel blue instead of red - you make it round like it should've been in the first place.

The reason why everybody talks about the every-other-release pattern is because it's true. 95 was new, they fixed a bunch of issues and came out with 98. 2000/Me introduced new features, XP had the fixes. Vista introduced new features and UI, 7 had the fixes. Now we're at 8, which is new with a host of features and yet another UI.

So everyone will wait until they fix all the issues with the new features and UI when they come out with 9. And with 10 they'll more than likely introduce yet another set of features, UI and the problems that go with it.
