In 2 days.. a prospective client is about to offer us a 24inch widescreen mac for windows vista machine. He bought the Mac a month ago.. and hates it.
So he wants to swap it. Now mind you we do have a new custom build we just made literally 3 days ago. Spec wise its equal to the mac. Would you take him on that offer? And if you did what would you do with the mac? Keep it for training purposes? Resell it for a profit?.. Or even accept it?

The only way i would take it is if he agreed to atleast pay what it cost you to build the new system build. An average system build using quality intel parts with a INWIN case is around 528 to 625 "our cost" so if you could atleast get your money back out of the system then go for it. I personally don't think MAC's are worth the money but thats my bias opinion. I wouldn't sink my own money into one.

I would get it for training use. as you will come across a person needing help with there mac. and well, you will need to know how to use the mac and the commands to use in terminal. I service macs in my area. I make more money from mac users then pc users. As i charge more to service unix based systems, which include BSD, Linux, Unix and other variants.

Also i would still charge somethng for the custom pc. as you did spend time building it.

I take his hand n'all. How can you lose? A 24" iMac here costs €1399. I can build a similar machine using top range parts and supply a 24" TFT for about €850. The Mac's immediate resale value, assuming it's only a month old and you have the paperwork and all accessories etc., would be about €1250. Like I say, how can you lose - assuming of course that the money paid for the build isn't meant to pay the rent or something.

How can you base your thought of hate of mac with no experience?

(I'm not a mac fanboy, just curious)

You will see that here a lot here for some reason. People who have no idea what Macs are about, but they know they have to hate them....lol

Yep, Macs have great resale value.

I think he means he would hate to trade. Not hate the Mac. I would go for the trade. I plan on getting a cheap Mac (probably off Ebay), to get more experience with them. I have a little knowledge on Macs, but need more.

(Cheap Shot)
I'd charge him for his audacity to own a mac.
(sorry, had to do it)

Then accept the trade, assuming both systems are equal value. Any serious tech should have a PC and a Mac at their disposal.

Very cheap shot!!! Down-right dirty. If the world ran on Macs we'd have no jobs... Be glad to take it off his hands. =)

Definitely. My laptop is a Macbook Pro. Ummm, you aren't gonna charge me for that are ya?

For those who said take it and for the build time charge him I did think of that as well. I like the idea of having one for training purposes. Because we do have a very affluent mac club in our area and I know the president of the club.

Not a bad idea, I was thinking of getting one so I can learn about it myself if I ever get money. If you feel guilty throw in a free support call or something.
