What is going on? Found router on 192.168.120.1

The other day I plugged in the IP for my router at home, 192.168.20.1, but I made a typo and typed in 192.168.120.1. Much to my surprise, the login page for a Microtik router popped up. I ran a tracert, and there are a couple of hops before I get to it.

So what's going on here? Is there a router on my ISP's network that is using 192.168.120.1 as a WAN IP and nowhere between me and it blocking access?

It is just another IP address on a network Interface on another layer-3, private IP subnet... one that happens to be used further down the line away from you probably by your ISP.

Apparently they do not have any ACL blocking your access to the logon page. One would think they would allow access from only a certain subnet or group of IPs or something along those lines.

It would be illegal to try and logon to it even if you could find the default passwords for Microtik with a simple Internet search and they never changed it, so none of us are encouraging you to attempt to go any further with this.

Something else is going on here. If the setup is the same as most others I have seen, there is a public IP address at the ISP modem at the site. So NAT traversal will prevent direct access from one private IP address to another private IP address unless there is a VPN tunnel.

Interesting. The WISP is using a wireless private LAN to provide service and routing the traffic probably through one public IP.

Aha, yes, I'm using a WISP. So does this have to do with the antenna part?
A lot of them use combination of Ubiquiti and Microtik. You can look on your antenna and see what brand it is. The ip in question is most likely an upstream router of some sort if it's not the wireless CPE on your house.

oh wait, you said login for microtik router. yes, upstream router. Does microtik even make wireless CPE for wisps?

I noticed the same years ago - was able to ping a load of private IP addresses when using a 3.4ghz antennae! I reported it to the ISP but never learned more about it.

Reminds of back in the early days of the Internet with dialup connections. Most ISP did very little traffic management. You could fire up a W98 machine go to browse network and see all of the shares being advertised. Amazing what kind of stuff people put into their public shares.

Heh...yup. Even in the early days of broadband...especially smaller cable ISPs....before routers became popular..just a single PC plugged into a modem, PC got the public IP address...you could browse away easily.
