Because you can't place 5 monitors in view such that you don't have to "pan and scan" between them. That involves moving one's head a lot more than looking at a single monitor does.

One of my son's customers went to a smaller flat screen TV and gave my son his 65" 4k curved TV, when he went there to help hook the new TV up. My son's a gamer and absolutely loves this TV. The man only bought it a year ago so it was still brand new.

I personally like the physical separation of the screens because each screen performs a job and those jobs I prefer to be static in position. I have 4 screens total at my Office station all on adjustable stands. From left to right I have

22" / 27" / 27" / 22"

My left most screen is mostly out of my field of view and as such it's dedicated to fun. (Youtube/Twitch)

Left middle is my main screen with my icons and is also where I typically perform all my remote support

Right middle is a screen dedicated to chrome and I typically have 6 tabs open (Email, Calendar, Invoicing, Google Messages, Syncro) I also use this screen for web browsing.

My right most screen is for the tools I use regularly and all day long. (1Password, Google Finance, Google Notes). When I am working on something and it gets put on hold for one reason or another like when I can't get ahold of a client or I want to remain logged into a tenant but can't complete what I am doing it also gets moved to this screen for later use.

God love 'ya! That's my idea of hell. It is an instance, though, where were I to want that level of task separation I'd probably use virtual desktops. I'd rather jump between those on one monitor than face "a wall of monitors."

Serious question: About what, exactly?

Virtual desktops that you can flip between have been a part of Windows for some time now via Task View.

Get more done with multitasking in Windows​

If you don't want to keep the Task View Widget on the taskbar, WinKey + Tab brings up the task view where you can create another virtual desktop or quickly arrow through to or directly click on a window you want to bring to the front on the current desktop.

I wonder if the virtual vs physical aligns with those who use notepads (physical) vs digital notes, as in a physical barrier between information sets.

I feel I would get lost, it's nice to have a physical seperation.

Same with myself, I have three separate Asus 27" Monitors on a three armed mount and swing anywhere vertically and horizontally. I can work seperate or as one with "surround mode".
