First thing I would like to say about disks I carry.

Never carry the original. Always take a copy and store the original safely.

Second thing is to remember that many AV and utilities have bootable recovery disks or are bootable.
eg Symantec, Panda.........

Third important one is a BartPE to run check disk on unbootable systems and use the AC43 explorer like file management utility.

A non-automated Windows XP cd (so I can do Repair - chkdsk /p)

A good BartPE to restore the registry, or to delete malware files that I couldnt delete in safe mode.

I never carry Antivirus recovery CDs. On site, if you cant clean it with combofix/smitfraud/autoruns/PE-manual-delete, prolly faster to just reformat everything.

And Knoppix... I've had it screw up hard drives too often to even consider it anymore. BartPE can do it all. It is the single most important tool in this biz.

Although I've never had Knoppix screw up a hd, I'll certainly never say it can't happen.

I love the BartPE based tools, but they can't do it all. Many, many times I've pulled files from disks with a Linux boot disk - generally Knoppix - that Windows based disks couldn't even see.

Hirens
knoppix
Ontrack ERboot
Trinity Rescue Kit

and of course,

KONBOOT, I hate it when its password protected and they arnt there.

That is correct. It will boot to the cd, you press space and it boots the computer up.

All hashes, etc, as far as I know and have found are left intack.

yup konboot just monitors the startup and removes the SAM password, its great for working on PC's.

active password remover and similar just remove the password completely which is good for times when you need to do that.

I used to have a Reatogo X-PE but I thought they stopped the revisions back in 2006, maybe I'm just not looking in the right place.
