What are the max DSL speeds in your area?

I'm really fed up with the phone company we have around here, Windstream. Before they rolled into town we had a local Telco that provided top notch service for everyone and I never heard any complaints. I was getting 12/2 DSL service which gave me about 1.4-1.5MBps continuous transfer and 256KBps upstream. When Windstream took over about 3 years ago they said they were installing all new switching and routing equipment to provide faster services. Then I got a notice that I could no longer receive my 12/2 and the fastest was 6/1 as I was too far from the CO (less than a mile on the main street - a straight run to the office).

This makes no sense, they upgrade all their hardware and the result is slower speeds?

I complained loudly and publicly and was able to keep my service at the same speed and the service was fine 95% of the time, but every 28 days or so, my service went down to about 3KBps like clockwork. This happened for about 2 years and everytime I would request a tech to come out. They always said that it was something in the line and I asked "what in the line would make it happen every 28 days and clear up in 3 days?" Their answer - weather,. I just said "whatever - don't lie to me - just fix the problem".

The strange thing is that when they were out serviceing the lines I would run speed tests and would get outrageous speeds like 192MBps, 194MBps, 191MBps, etc, and the techs said they didn't know why and thought that was impossible. I said that it seems that the speed limiter must have been turned off for testing or my line was switched over to an unmetered port for testing.

These speed tests obviously prove that these lines can handle much more bandwidth than they are letting on to but they don't want to give us the speeds they could because they are milking the bandwidth capacity for all they can (profit reasons I'm sure). But why say they can't give 12/2 to my house when 100ft away my neighbor can have it? Doesn't add up.

So what kind of speeds are you seeing as the high end of DSL in your area? Anyone having these BS problems with Windstream?

Still better than what we can get. In town we can get DSL at a max speed of 1.5.

The best we can get is metrocast at 12 by 768, and that comes at a high cost, only in select areas in town.

Best I can get at home is about 1, and it only works 1/2 the time.

Sorry, but I can't really feel for you...

EDIT:

Also, I don't know what your modem is, but I don't know any DSL modems that have a gigabit port that would support that. Some tests are rubbish and will give you a progresivly faster test result each time you run it that few min.

Im lucky to live close to our exchange . At home im syncing at 21000/985. At work we are further away but are getting about 14000/900.

Windstream has signs up everywhere in my town offerign 12. NO ONE here has 12. I have been in literally hundreds of thier customers houses here, no one has it. They are all told they are too far away....
So most only get 6. With a lucky few getting 3.

On the other hand Cableone offers 50. Yes, 50, and its cheaper too, when you figure in all the extra "universal service charge", "High Cost Fee" and etc Windstream charges.
