Custom built AMD desktops are really good for mid range systems. The FX-8320 is faster than the i5-6500 at about 1/2 the price. Granted AMD can't touch Intel when it comes to their highest end chips, but most people aren't looking for the highest end.
I honestly could not imagine a single circumstance I would recommend any current AMD processor over a 6500. (Although honestly, who would not spend $9-$10 more dollars on a 6500k, which nets what...+400 more MHz base clock?)
AMD processors are 'lived with', IMO, a compromise of generally lesser performance in 90% of most apps for sometimes a savings of perhaps $40 on total system cost. (That $40 of hypothetical savings will likely be spent pretty quickly in increased power bills in short order...)
