Anyone familiar with the WD Green disks randomly locking up (unresponsive)? Is this a known issue? I have one about 2010 model. No errors, passes tests. Doing a ddrescue image, I noticed every so often it would just stop for maybe 10 seconds then continue without error. I'm inclined to tell the customer a new hdd is required.

I haven't had any issues like that but the failure rates on Green drives is fairly high. I'd just sell them a new drive anyway, save all the hassles. My .02 :p

if in doubt swap it out.
I'm inclined to agree.

When in doubt, replace. HDD's are so cheap these days that I'm sure your client would agree with your decision. When I get an iffy drive in my shop, I let the client know that it's passing all the tests but doesn't perform quite right and that I recommend replacement. I explain that diagnostics allow us to pinpoint a possible problem, but in the end it's up to the technician's judgement and experience to make the final call.

A common issue with all the Western Digital drives in that era were that the PCBs would start to fail. It might be resolved with transferring the ROM to another matching PCB, but the drive really isn't worth the effort if the data is already backed up. Just replace the drive before it completely gives out.

i reckon that's probably it. I'm putting these in the same category as the blue drives. Back it up and bin it! :)

Hi Glennd,

I haven’t used this hard drive but have seen that these hard drives are causing various issues such as freezing, low performance during reading and writing, etc.

So, my suggestion for you is - create a backup of this drive and wipe it completely (if you have an important piece of data inside it).

Good Luck!

@glennd Just in case you didn't know!

Hi @oliverpowell I notice your profile says you are an "Enduser (Not a Technician)"

If any doubts, just replace it. SSD or WD black would be my choices.
