Warranty on Custom-Build system (parts)

Since I have started I haven't done a lot of custom builds, maybe 4 in all. Lately one of these clients called me to inform me that he is getting a No Signal message. Brought the system to my home office to find out that the Power Supply is malfunctioning. The system is only around 7 months old.

My question is, shall I issue another invoice just as if he's buying the PSU only? Meaning, the PSU with a 24 months warranty and the rest of the system with 24 minus the 6 months? Or does the new PSU continues with what's left? (meaning 17 months).

Also the new PSU is not the same as the old one, wattage and brand is different, but it's enough for the system. I don't really want to replace it with the same brand and model. Does it matter?

Believe it or not it's the first time for me dealing with RMA and devices failing during warranty period, so it's all new for me. Never had any other problems with parts I've sold to clients.

Thanks :)

BTW, should you be interested, the PSU is a Xilence Green Power 550W.

My standard practice is to replace the faulty part with the warranty the remainder of the original warranty, I dont extend it just for that part.

Also as long as part is fit for purpose you are free to replace with what you see fit. You can fit the same model or another model if you wish - Your T&C should cover this

Most suppliers follow this approach. How many give you a new warranty on replacement hard drives for example - None that I know of

Thanks. I usually list the amount of months the device is warrantied for in the invoice. At the bottom I have 4 columns, 1st for the amount of devices, 2nd for the brand and model of the device (or any other specs), 3rd for the warranty period (in days or months), and 4th for the price.

I don't know if you use the same or similar method, but in this case I'm also in doubt of what should I write down in the warranty column.

I've added what you suggested in the T&Cs, thanks.

Do you charge for diagnostics and labour in these cases? Thanks.

Personally no- not if I supplied the system, I absorb the cost as my warranty is parts and labour for the period, depends on if you only warranty the parts? For the cost I'd be tempted to keep it in house especially seeing as it's a simple psu swap out

Yes, I just swapped in the PSU... no big deal. Took around 5 minutes to find out it's the PSU. I usually give out 30 days warranty on my work (being it a new system or any other job).

I then give 24 months on parts (it's that by the EU law).

Better check.

Do you know about any law regarding warranty seals in EU? As it's not the first time the clients try to fix the problem by removing the RAM, then damaging the stick or something. Was thinking of getting some and using them.
