[SOLVED] VMware ESXI 5.0 server rack - data retrieval

Getting a real server on eBay that can handle VM's are relatively low cost
How is the sound and heat produced by that server? I have a PE2900 Tower and it sounds like a damn jet engine when I turn it on. I office out of my home and don't have any kind of closet I can put it in. It is just too noisy to run in the same room with it and in summer the amount of heat is overwhelming. So it just sits off unless I have to test something. Would love to replace it with something affordable that isn't such a PITA to be in the same room with.

Most of the 2900 series sound like an airport. Most servers have the fans hit 100% during power on, but then once the OS loads up and the system drivers load...the fans throttle down, controlled from then on by thermostat. BUT..the 2900 models, esp the 2950....that row of little fans scream 100% the whole time. Ask me (and my clients) how they know!

Some other R models though...just fine, normal sounds.
HP Proliants don't have much complaint for noise either.

Added note...VMWare has some "brand specific" downloads..that include some base system drivers in the core...such as a special download for HP Proliant servers.
Prior to those, we used to install some special drivers, such as HPs "Lenny Deliverables"..which were system drivers for debian. I used those for some Untangle installs.

Like @YeOldeStonecat said pretty much all of them power up at full throttle. The R710's are very quite for me during normal operations. Both are in an open space, stacked one on top of the other, next to my bedroom and I don't even notice them. But remember that they do not have huge loads. I agree the 29xx series are another story.
