Vista versus Linux

Comparing an out of box Windows Vista to a modified Ubuntu- not exactly fair.

The person who made it is obviously severely biased against Microsoft- a quote from the video description.

Very childish...And the video at the end wasn't really needed. Why is an old windows preview considered relevant?

Another thing- Compiz is far too complex. Note that it took only 1:30 to summarize Windows Aero and it took 2:38 to summarize compiz fusion. The glitter effect is gaudy at best and the wobble effect is cheap, the 3d-workspace cube needs much work and isn't user friendly in my opinion however I've always been a fan of the minimize/maximize feature, although that was ripped from OSX.

There are much better comparison videos out there, although none with my all time favorite song. SO in turn- I give this a +1.

While I will agree with that I'll also say I would recommend Linux over Vista in a heart beat. I would actually recommend Windows 7 over either of them.

Depending on the situation of course. If the person is just doing some web browsing, email and word processing then of course.

But the second that person wants to do something like gaming (please don't mention Wine- it's horrible!), video editting, or anything else of the such I will recommend Windows- however Music will always be a Mac only thing to me on the enthusiast to professional level.
 
I just downloaded the Linux Mint 8 iso; booted it up.
What can I say ? I love it !

Even from the CD its faster than my Vista. And I know by the time I install it to my HDD it will be significantly faster (well it would if my HDD was 7200rpm @ LEAST).

Everything worked straight out of the box like it said it does. Even picked up my card reader which I was suprised about. My touchpad works flawlessly; even the lil' scrollpad bit on the side works without a hitch, which I was very suprised about.

I was also able to connect to my partners Laptop (D drive is shared) straight out of the box as well. No configuration needed at all. How lovely :)

Can't wait to get my other computer up and running ( spare parts needed ) so I can transfer the crap off this laptop and install Linux Mint as my full-time OS
 
Well at least JosephLeo gave it a plus 1 ... LOL.

For me compiz is easy, i can see how some people might think it's complicated. I guess it depends on what features you are using. Like it would take an awesome memory to learn all the keystrokes for all the cool things and eye candy that it can do. Some people have that. On the other hand, Even someone who is less than average could figure out the basics of just spinning the cube to a different desktop.

I stil like it. :)
 
Eye candy is a waste to me. It is like painting flames on you car. If your car is fast you don't have to tell people. :)

Eye candy is a waste- but overall design is one of most important features second only to actual functionality. I would take aero over compiz "sparkles"...and even more so over the default KDE theme.
 
O I much prefer compiz, it's faster, and you can do so much more with it than you can with aero. Compiz is an amazing feat of open source engineering. I also feel that if you have to stare at something all day, why can't it be candy? LOL. I think some people just don't like Linux in general. I'm not going to get trolled into another p*ssing contest for linux functionality.

The argument that "eyecandy is a waste" is so mute, when you are touting 'aero' like it's the end all for everyone... If eyecandy is waste then there is always plain jane dos for you to go back to, but I don't see people running back to that. LOL.

Also graphical intensive ability demonstrates the speed of an operating system better than most other things, and I think Linux has definitely mastered it. :) If you really think "eyecandy is a waste" then strip your windows down to nothing but a shell, or in the very least remove the themes and set everything back to flat land, and while your at it, why not primer your car. LOL.

I have to agree with PcTek9 here. I just started playing with Compiz a week or two ago, enabling every open/close/minimize/maximize visual effect I could find, and while it added nothing to the functionality of the computer, it sure makes it more fun. I get a little grin every time my page burns away, beams out, or flies away :) . Then, when I compared the memory usage with everything cranked up, about 250MB, to that of XP with everything turned off, about 400MB, my grin became a toothy smile :D . With my Toshiba laptop running XP, whenever there's the slightest graphics-intensive operation going on, the cooling fan cranks up. With Ubuntu or Mint and all the Compiz toys, hardly ever. Sure, flames don't make the car faster, but hell, if it's my car and flames make it more fun to drive, why not? I was the kid who put old playing cards in my spokes. It slowed me down, but sure sounded tough! Of course, I'd take them out for a race (and never lost!). I'll never grow up!
 
Really, I like using the ring tab switcher, and now that I have the cube - I wonder how I got on without it. For me flipping to another side where I have stuck applications to "perculate" in the background.

The cube adds to my productivity, and the ring tab switcher is just a much better way of doing alt tab switching on each desktop than the way windows designed theirs.

You are right about the memory usage too, linux is just faster, I just really enjoy using linux.

You know something else is a bit muddled here too: People always talk about Linux's virus immunity. When the open source community finds about a virus for linux, they fix the problem. But there are only like 8 viruses for linux and now everything totaled there is like 750,000 viruses/trojans for windows.

It isnt just b/c more people use windows than linux, that there are more viruses for windows. The major reason there are 8 viruses for linux and 750,000 for windows is the core design.

The way that linux was designed from the ground up with security in mind, binding users to complex security settings in the beginning that are built into the O/S. Something windows didn't do initially, and when they did, it's still not on the same level of sophistication as linux.

Also the way the system is designed is different. For example shatter attacks for escalated security privleges didn't bother linux at all, b/c in windows you can send messages between applications, and windows does not check if the messages are correct in format passing between apps, with linux it's not even an issue, b/c in linux the windows really are xwindows running the apps, and they expect everything a certain way. In microsoft windows the window ACTUALLY is an instance of the application, whereas in linux the window is a part of xwindows server.

Good security admins for windows will say "yeah but microsoft invented a way to turn off interprocess messaging". ok... that's great... But it was never an issue with linux. Everyone knows that linux is more secure right out of the box. You can make windows secure by creating policy, setting user rights, and so on and so forth. Linux has a different philosophy. In linux the user gets nothing, and you have to 'give' them their rights to use different things.

Huh? Who ever touted Aero? It is OK, don't get me wrong, but does it serve much purpose? No. It is like having a nice paint job on a new car. It is a good idea but that is it. Likewise you can turn off the rain drops and burning flames on different Linux distros. And Pctek9 does make a great point that Linux is typically much more efficient with resources. Beyond that I can't find any compelling reason to use Linux. Certainly nothing that over comes it limitations. Others feel differently and in their situation are likely right. Just as no one car is right for everyone no one OS is. Most of us love our Toyota Camry though! :)
