Hi All,

I have a client's machine that has come in now 3 times for the same problem. The issue is that the laptop will work fine for days or weeks, then suddenly the BCD will be corrupt. The error is:

File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

The OS is Vista Home Basic 32-Bit (SP2). There seems to be no rhyme or reason for the error to occur, however, this time the computer finished installing some Windows updates when it booted after being repaired.

The fix is simple enough, just boot from the Vista installation DVD and select the repair option. However, I don't want to inconvenience my client. Has anybody ran into this issue before? Any idea on what I can do to resolve it?

I wonder what's going on right before the BCD gets corrupted.

No malware? Hard drive is good? I wonder if you N&P it, will it happen yet again? Might be worth offering your client the option...

EDIT: I wouldn't use the recovery partition if it exists, and I would probably pave that too. Not saying your issue has anything to do with this, but a side story is that I used to work for Gateway, and I can recall several cases where once a certain amount of data was written to the partition many things could happen up to and including a corrupted MBR. We weren't supposed to tell the customer it was a known issue, but something was wrong with the partition creation from the restore CD and/or the factory system image even, and the only resolution was to ship them revised restore CDs to do the N&P with.
