I upgraded a system from gtx 280 to hd 7970 and power supply according to box requirement is 600w i put in a thermaltake 650w.
System runs gw2 for about 20 mins system just powers off fans on 7970 are spinning so video card is not overheating, cpu fan new paste normal operating temps and power supply meets wattage and amperage requirements.
I guess 650w is not enough or power supply maybe faulty?.

Of course it could be faulty, did you acctually check the temps to make sure it isn't overheating? Does it shut down after 20 minutes no matter what or only durring gaming, or gaming a particular game? I'd double check the temps.

Only shuts down playing games all temps are normal range.
Only thing that was changed was video card and power supply before that
it was rock solid no crashes or shut downs.

What temp are you getting on the GPU during game play ?

70-75c it has dual fans and heat pipes and one HUGE heatsink with fins it has a program that came with it the monitors temps, voltage, fan speed, frequency all settings are set to stock no OC.
It beeps if it gets too hot never beeped and was in normal range it keeps a graph.

Well, you can try going back to old GPU first, and see how it goes.
If it still happens, then it's likely it's the PSU. So test it as best you can.

If it doesn't crash with the old GPU in there, then maybe it's the GPU.

Seems like a bit of testing is in order, but kind of a pain...

Good luck!

I'm still suspecting a heat issue, unless the PSU is being drawn to a point where it shuts down from heat. Still something about pushing this system to a point where it gets too hot SOMEWHERE makes the most sense. That would only happen when you got the graphics card going full blast.

A power monitor that you plug the system into might give a clue how much you are pulling when gaming, but thats only good if the PSU is shutting down because of the draw.

Ok i checked the bios and it was old really old there were at least 6 new revisions so i flashed it to the newest version ran multiple games,3dmark for good 2 hrs no more problems and the frame rates are 40% higher than before.

If it acts up again.....with higher end graphics cards, you want to check their requirements for amps on the 12 volt rails of the power supply. It's often not enough just to look at watts of a power supply. Higher power graphics cards need adequate amps on the 12 volt rails. Many power supplies...even if they have crazy high wattage, can have inadequate amps on the 12 volt rails. Like less than 18...and the card wants at least 18.

Furmark is your friend when testing power issues related to video card though to be fair it does use more power than any game would ever use but still 650watt should be more than enough.
