I`ve been using msconfig for years but have been advised that it ain`t such a great idea.
Supposedly,it is to be used for diagnostic purposes only.Any ideas?Alternatives?
I have noticed any problems but I reinstall windows annually...

I use it sometimes; things like 'Diagnostic Mode' can be pretty useful. Most people will recommend you Autoruns by Sysinternals because it can do much more than msconfig

Sounds like bollocks to me. Autoruns is a better program, but in a pinch, msconfig will do the job.

The warning is for end-users, not techs.

MSconfig is a tool, just like any other tool. If you dont know what you are doing, then, yeah, its not a good idea to play around with it.

Methinks this is what the warning is getting at:: not relevant for techs.

I have been using Anvir Task Manager Free for a few years now I would say I can't do without it. It is incredibly useful.

This free version is all you'll need. Packs a lot of features.

'Nana, I had a look at this, but it seemed to be an installer (pro version). Is it available as a portable app? How do you use it on client machines - have you used Soluto or something to make it portable?

Must have got the link wrong. Just check the first link and get the freeware version, doesn't say anything about Pro to me. This seems to be a portable version. Never used it though, always install it on a client's system. I don't mind and it installs in a jiffy :)

EDIT: Seems like every download is a trial now. The version I grabbed about a year ago was freeware, doesn't expire. I'll have to look into this.

Autoruns is the king. MSconfig will do if I'm on a system with broken USB and dialup and it'll take way too much time to get Autoruns on. Autoruns also looks at so many other sections that MSconfig ignores. And it's small, free, and portable.

I've been using msconfig for years especially useful when dealing malware I also use the advanced features of spybot search and destroy to disable startup progs.

I tend to agree wiv a previous post that the warnings are for end users rather than techs, used it on hundreds of occasions with no problems.

Watch the presentation by Mark Russinovich if you want to know why autoruns is preferred to msconfig. I'll dig out the link tomorrow.

Problems with SysinternalsSuite?

I have installed the above prm and like all the features [cpu temp and load monitors, startup mgr, etc]
Trouble is that Firefox won`t let me open Yahoo mail.
Coincidence?
Any one have this problem?
