Hi, I'm working on a pc that was recently cleaned of viruses and left in a mess. I had to do a repair install of xp. Everything appears fine now, except user accts. There are two, Aaron & Maria, and thats the way it appears in control panel users and in the login screen at boot. But-then if you open my comp and open C>documents & settings you see Aaron and Chelsey no Maria, however all maria's docs are in there, no place else. I tried too rename it Maria, but ofcourse xp said it was a system file so no go. If I right-click and look at the properties is says maria/chelsey for the name. Any clues how to fix this? Do I have to create a new user and copy all marias files to it then delete the old maria acct? wouldn't that create more probs?

hmmm whos chelsey i think the wife would like to know

seems that it was changed by a external application

when you change the user name after you've set it up, the original name will be left on everything, except on the login and the most visible parts of the os, in other words it changed the most noticble places where the name is mentioned but not anywhere else, you can also notice this when you wanna remove the password the p/w removal program will give you the original name and not the current (changed) name.

So does this mean I cannot get rid of Chelsey? Its kinda annoying I'm sure. I believe she had taken it to a shady competitor and they formatted and reinstalled, i bet they realized after setting up her users that they had the wrong name of the customer!!

windows knows you, your past, your future, your present. dont try to run from it you will just make it angry. try logging into a live cd and changing it that way as then windows wont be able to tell you off for it.

I thought of trying that with my UBCD4win, will that mess up her access to those files then?

its more than just the name of the folder, there are quite a few reg keys that use the original name, the easiest way is to create a new user and migrate the settings and files

I tried that, there was no problem creating a new acct and moving the files-BUT the systems original user is Chelsey/maria, I couldn't create a new user with the name maria, it wouldn't let me because the name was already in use. Can I just backup the old one then delete it, then create the new maria one with the files copied to it???

WRONG answer, I tried it, just screwed up the account.

rename maria to maria1 reboot then you'll be able to make a new user called maria.

I tried that too, ran into permissions issues, even in safe mode as administrator trying to copy the files to the new maria. I finally used ubcd to copy the maria1 folder to the desktop, pasted the contents of the folder to the new maria then deleted maria1;)
