UBCD for Win won't load on emachines

OK, this is odd. I have a very infected emachines in (specs up in office... I'll get later if needed). When I try to boot from UBCD Win, it just hangs after Boot from CD... OK. Goes no further. I used this same disk on another machine right before I tried this one and it worked fine. Built another one, just in case, and it failed as well. Was able to boot with Hiran's and an XP CD (just to test, right now). It seems like it doesn't like the boot loader. Any thoughts?

I'm going to pull the drive and work on it from my bench machine, but I don't like being stumped like this.

I've had this happen a couple times. Usually with older machines. I have a spare cd drive that I usually use when this happens and that does the trick. Some of the older cd drives have trouble reading certain disks. I'm not sure of the age of your machine but that possibly could be the reason.

Thanks, NickCat11. I do have spares as well as an external CD drive. The bios on this thing does have an option to boot from a removable drive. I'll try the external first. I've had to do it before with failed CD drives, but this is the first time with a working one. Have to eat dinner first though. ;-)

Personally I would go down a different route. There's plently of linux live cd's with antiviruses on them, which will have better generic drivers.

Drweb - here

Bitdefender - here

Avira - here

Kaspersky - here

There's plently more I'm just lazy :).
Alternatively you could slave the drive and scan it from there.

Hi iisjman07,

Sure I could, and I have been working on it slaved. I still want to know why UBCD4Win won't work on it. It still wouldn't work with the other CD drives...

I find that sometimes. My burner (Philips DVD8881) is poor at burning CDs; high error rate. Try re-burning it at lower than full speed and see if that helps, or try a different burner.

Three different UBCD disks tried. Two done on one machine and the third on another. All three work on other machines, just not on this one...

One of things I read while burning UBCD (or for that matter any of the recovery CDs) was to burn it at 16X, such that older CD drives can read it. It takes longer to burn but insures they will be read ok.

Don't think that's it either. The external drive that I've used before to boot with UBCD4Win wouldn't work on this machine either.
