Two Hard Drives / One Cable?

Hello friends, new the forums. Sort of upset, though.

I know an "alright" amount about computer parts, but not enough to fix them myself. Here's my problem:

I've got two hard drives. One is my system drive, and the other is my data drive. I've had a lot of "data" drives act funny (and go bad), and I'm starting to think it's the SATA cable that's bad, not the hard drives. Why, you ask? I just bought a brand new drive, put it in, and it worked great. Tried it this morning, it didn't work. Opened the case/turned off power/unplugged the hard drive SATA cable, plugged it back in, and it worked great the rest of the day.

I'm starting to think maybe the connector is dirty or damaged or just old (i've had the motherboard for a while). I've got a DFI Motherboard, and from what I can tell, I've got some sort of (perhaps) 32pin connector that goes to a dual-SATA cable.

Question 1: Do cables like this usually go bad? Can they? Does my problem sound like something other than the cable?
Question 2: If the cable theory IS possible, is this the sort of thing I need?: Newegg Product N82E16812198020

???

Thank you in advance

Kendal

Please follow these simple directions;

1. Unplug your machine and everything plugged into it.
2. Take it down to your local computer repair shop
3. Explain to them your issue in detail
4. Open your wallet, and ask them to fix it.
5. Pick it up once the repair is done, and bid a nice thank you to the kind man / woman behind the counter
6. Return home, and plug in your PC
7. Ensure proper working order.
8. Have a great day.

Thats one of the best posts i've seen in a while, thanks ACG for giving me a good old fashioned belly laugh.

And

That's fully in accord with my proposed extra rule.

A laugh with every post.

Thanks ACG.

Sorry to be pedantic, but that's three questions to which my answers are: No, Yes, Yes.

2: If the cable theory IS possible, is this the sort of thing I need?: Newegg Product N82E16812198020
If the cable theory is true then it's the sort of thing you might need, but it might also be the sort of thing you'll buy that doesn't fix your problem and you'll have wasted your money, time and effort.

If only there was a local professional you could call upon who would sort it all our for you for a very reasonable fee...

No parochialism or racism

Now I'm torn...... is that parochialism or racism???? No matter...he long gorn! Good answers by the way....perhaps not very tactful, but then,I don't suppose it was meant to be was it?:D

I don't believe it's necessary to egregiously insult those who are trying to learn, if such an individual demonstrates honest effort. Lest anybody should think themselves more than they are, always remember that even the big shots have to start somewhere on the totem pole. People who have forgotten what it was like ask for help usually get swollen heads, tech or not.

To start with, the OP doesn't sound or even make himself appear to be a tech as shown by

It doesn't say that he is working on somebody else's PC, therefore he seems to be an end user and that isn't who we support here.

Second off, I think those were humorous, albeit insulting, instructions used to tell the OP that he should go find a professional tech in his local area. If you are so offended by us not wanting to support end users here, perhaps you can go help them yourself here, here or here.

Not suggesting help

I'm not suggesting to help anybody, but I'm simply saying that it's not cool to be rude to somebody. I understand people may want free advice, but if somebody is trying to learn something new, what's wrong with asking people smarter and more knowledgeable than yourself? One thing I've certainly learned in life is that the smartest people are those who ask advice of and surround themselves with those who are more knowledgeable and experienced in a particular area. So why beat the guy up, huh? Any expert one had to learn from the ground up.

Any expert one had to learn from the ground up.

But that's not the purpose of this forum. People with no REAL technical background come here every day and ask for help in "noob" speak and for the millionth time we have to remind them what this place is about and then direct them to go somewhere else.

BTW- calling someone a 'prick' around here will often get you on ignore lists or perhaps bitch-slapped by the boss (bryce).

It's the end users and people that defend them that are really starting to P me off here. When I joined it was a wealth of information on difficult problems and good solid business advice. Now it's just this BS time and time again. Soon it will end up being like podnutz daily... if he explains how to reset the CMOS on that podcast one more time I swear to god....

Here's an idea for something like this, IF the OP is truly a "tech"... wait for it...

SWITCH THE CABLE! I know, hard diagnosis, hard to test, hard to report back on and say oh it was my cable.

As to Trj, I've learned a lot from ACG, but he feels the same as most of us about this becoming another run of the mill forum for joe blow to sign up an account, ask a random question, and then people on here already working 80hrs a week, weekends, etc to answer a NON-PAYING question. I'm pretty sure if people wanted to volunteer their time they'd join a soup kitchen and not try to feed themselves and their families offering computer services. If I joined a professional landscaping forum and asked how to install sod I'd be laughed off there too.

Way to be professional Trj as well.

I know the rules say we are not just supposed to post agreeing to another post, but that was FANTASTIC! Let me say p_m I feel your frustration. As for Trj Im taking NYJimbo's famous route, "another one for the ignore list".
