Hi, I was wondering, I use fab's all the time for data migration to new pc's. Is there an application that works as well to transfer from windows files to ipad???

Dropbox

When you think about it, most data would be useless on an ipad but docs, etc are great.
I have almost 8GB of storage due to referrals (only need half that) but I can access anything I want and, with a couple of other apps on the ipad, open just about anything I want. 'Bout the only thing I can't open are ODTs but I can open and edit DOCs, PDFs, TXTs....

I have a friend who just got one, shes not impressed, theres no chat function on facebook for her! (I presume thats because there is no flash) She wants her stuff from her xp laptop moved over, but I wasn't sure if anything would even work, she uses firefox, so can her bookmarks at least be imported into safari? Can open her Office .doc files?

The Facebook app might have it.

an open her Office .doc files?
Yes, try Dropbox or Airshare

You shouldnt think of the iPad PC alternative/replacement. Its kind of in its own class. Its kind of an ultralight nettop that relies more on cloud base services (facebook, gmail etc..) rather than local storage.

I am sure there are some third party services were you upload your favorites to the cloud and it'll Sync to the iPad, but you wouldnt be able to copy and paste it from XP to the iPad FabAutobackup style.

You asked about transferring data, not about debating for/against it.

Firefox has its own app, not a browser per se but, if you use the Firefox Sync add-on, you can sync your bookmarks to the app (and open tabs and history).

There are several Office-friendly apps, most cost a few bucks but, when compared with Office, are only a tiny fraction. Plus, Google is rolling out editing of Google Docs.
Edit: Docs can be opened directly from Dropbox, incidentally, or from email.

FWIW, my ipad will probably never replace my PC for its sheer usefulness but, for some uses, it's fantastic.

thanks everyone for your input, I haven't had time to do much research on them, her husband bought it for her as a laptop replacement, I told him they were very cool if all she wishes to do is surf, I did tell him the operating system would be different and it would take her getting used to, I was actually surprised when he went ahead and got it for her. She is totally non-tech, and I could see she would have preferred just another windows laptop, I myself am intrigued by this little thing> http://www.dell.com/content/topics/topic.aspx/global/products/landing/en/inspiron?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&ST=dell%20inspiron%20duo&dgc=ST&cid=61543&lid=1545737&acd=91872,8,0,113851073,774016322,1290487418,,29387670,6293877401

ipad is more of an oversized iphone (if people still need to be reminded that)

so anything you don't do on your smart phone, you don't do on the ipad. migrating from XP would be one of them. migrating from XP to MacOS seems more plausible.
