Ok,
Drive not recognized in win explorer or disk management using USB connection.

Connected using sata adaptor to usb to my win 7 machine.
(Took 2.5 out of enclosure). Drive is recognized in disk management but unallocated. Can't change drive letter.

Tried mounting using linux boot disk. Parted Magic. Can't mount but detected.
Tried running testdisk, found nothing, except a lot of errors.
Tried photorec but wouldn't work.
Currently trying rstudio trial.

Apparently this drive contains images that need to rescued.

Anyone got any other ideas besides sending off to data professional service.
Of course client wants this done on the cheap :)

Regards,

I agree, take the usb adapter out of the equation, and connect it directly to the motherboard, using the sata port. There is a possibility this may work long enough for you to image the drive.

Failing that, do no more actual testing or recovery programs, as this will put more pressure on the drive, and send it off to the pro's.

Ditto on what has been said - AND use a Live Linux DVD / CD to boot from and see if it can read the drive. If so, dump the contents onto another drive or back the data off (as in make a backup of the data / contents.)

May I suggest.......

If the drive has important (irreplacable) data.......STOP....Send it to the professionals.

Otherwise all the other advice given is good.

Also try dd_rescue......search forums for tutorials and more info.

At least that's how I would handle it.

I can image it for you using my DeepSpar most likely with much greater success.

If you are interested shoot me a PM and I'll hook you up with a B2B price. :)

Gee theres a shock a toshiba drive that is dying, i see so many people come in with toshiba externals that have broken they have been on sale a lot and i know geek squad uses them for backups,

Tldr never will i buy a toshiba external

Thanks guys for your suggestions. The hard drive is not recognized if I plug in directly to motherboard.

Oh well this one is over. The fat lady has sung.

If it's not making any sounds, then the chances are high for an affordable data recovery. If you want, reply with model number and I'll let you know if we've seen this one before.

This is not a DIY project. It is one of two scenarios...and not likely the second.

1. Damaged heads
2. Locked drive

The more you power on and try to scan the drive, the less likely that it will be recovered at a lab.
