Name calling? is that in reference to me or hondablaster? Also, I know you arent the only one keeping the topics going, I was just responding to your post.

Can we nominate mods? I nominate ACG, Timecode, gunslinger, Protech, or NYJimbo. If any of these guys have the time or willingness I stand behind any of them. There may be others that are suitable, those are just the top ones that come to my mind. If I left anybody out who is in these guys league, I'm sorry I meant you too.:D

Thanks for the compliment but I am not entirely certain that I am of the caliber required to perform this task. I would rather have others do it but if there aren't enough, I will step up to the plate.
 
As you guys sort and debate your nominations, keep in mind this forum is a learning resource for technicians, not personal agendas. Its important that whoever becomes a moderator has demonstrated the ability to remain objective in the face of disagreement. I always enjoy debate and fresh perspective. I would hate that to get flushed because of stresses that are happening in someones personal life and influencing his/her moderation of a forum.

I have enjoyed 99% of members in this forum and keep in mind if we all knew everything, we wouldn't post/visit technibble.

As I've said before I found this board while googling about Bomgar, the purchase of which I am contemplating for my impending move to self employment.

This seemed like a great resource - a collaborative association of self employed consultants, from which I could ask the REAL questions when they come up. Not how to get the system to post - It's about running a computer business, which ain't at all like fixing a computer.
Like what should my hours be? is it worth being open Sunday? What's the payoff for flyers, cold calling, word of mouth? legal issues, etc
I wouldn't consider diving into the above unless I had the "fixing" part under control. So I expect the business side of things to be the predominant subject here.


So what sets apart the part-timers from the actual businessmen? It's not the MCSE, A+ or whatever. Maybe it's a Certificate of General Liability Insurance?
That would certainly weed out the casual seeker of free support.

There were also a few threads lately that questioned the usefulness of computer repair directories, where you sign up and supposedly the customer looks there to find you. I saw one advertised on CL, it was free, but had maybe 15 signups in the whole DB. makes me suspicious....

Maybe Technibble should be the site where a USER can go to find a qualified INSURED tech in his area. So there could be a unregistered area for USERS (and I suppose the Dominoes guy), and the back room where the actually insured businessmen smoke cigars and discuss the real issues. Maybe the businessmen would offer remote assistance to the users for a fee....

I would love to be a moderator but I think in the past I have been a bit too rough on n00bs. I since adopted a more polite stance but as John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton (first Baron Acton) said in 1887: "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men."

As you see I just suggested my nominations. Its a free community for you to suggest yours as well. All fairness aside if that is an attempt to sling mud talking about personal agendas, I just made suggestions to whom I thought suitable. Whomever you may nominate that's your choice and I respect that by not commenting one way or the other about it.

But you are correct in pointing out remaining objective.
 
I think it would be best to eliminate "pizza techs" before they have chance to taint this forums with their crap. Make the user show proof that they are an employee or owner of a registered business. If they are running a legit business then they are less likely to charge $20 flat rate for onsite repair.

Also, can we get a sticky in all forums for the questions "Where can I get Windows CDs" and make it a bannable offense to anyone who posts that topic again.
 
No mudslinging. AMT I just want everyone to have a chance to be a member of this small unique group of guys. Regardless of skill level, i admire ambition and passion over skill. True ambition and passion will eventually overtake an arrogant incumbent any day, in any profession. Let a users post make or break their reputation. (dont let it spin out of control either) Dont lose sight of the purpose of technibble a tool and a resource for like minded individuals.

Don't believe the hype, I'm not a mudslinger or a grudge holder. That's a falsely projected image. Im also not fixing any PCs on craigslist, that is equally false, any information i have is from spending thousands of dollars on the newest gaming rigs. When they get old, I sell them to friends and family. Becaues I like it so much I simply attend school for it.

Back to the subject at hand, Im not going to nominate anyone Ill let you guys do that and let the best man win. :)

Thanks mac, I really appreciate that. Without rambling on and on I really just want to see the site the way it was. An awesome community full of knowledgeable, professional, and helpful members. This place has so much potential its unbelievable. Full of a great members.

And as a side note, I would also pay for TechNibble, I seem to live here most of the time anyway, might as well pay rent :p
 
We all think we should be paid for what we do and Bryce is no different. He let's us use his server, time and bandwidth. Let's show him the same respect that he has shown us.

Paying a fee would be no problem if there was a measurable base standard set, but lately that's gone right out of the window and this site's become a free-for-all when it boils down to the legitimacy of those who contribute as "professionals". If it's down to paying a fee, then "Pizza Tech" - which is who/what sparked this latest bun fight, will happily part with a "as long as it's reasonable" fee just to join this elite club of apparent professional practitioners so he can market his dubious skills to an unknowing consumer.

Unless there is a measure of acceptable conduct as a practitioner then no amount of posturing/fee paying/elitist group or whatever branding of exclusivity you chose to give it will serve any benefit to anyone.

Paying a fee does not equate to subscribing to a standard, but subscribing to an industry standard or code of conduct will probably necessitate a fee payment.
