The technology we have today is really amazing....

I know some tin-foil hats might get all bent out of shape about the following, but to me it really shows how much technology today can help solve crimes.

This week there was a huge brawl at the Resorts Casino here on Long Island. After the brawl some dude went out into the parking lot and fired off a gun and then hopped into his car and left. If that happened 10 years ago the chances are he would never have been caught. But today.....

"Police who were called to the area for shots fired obtained surveillance video from the parking lot and were able to track the suspect back into the casino. They connected him to a vehicle by using a license plate reader at one of the exits. A computer check of the building where the auto was registered yielded two people who were arrested in the past. Detectives from the Facial Recognition Unit identified Roberts as the shooter, cops said."

Wow, just wow.

That's the price of security in this day and age. Sad but true.

You could argue (and probably will), that this is the big brother mentality.

I don't think it's a case of the accumulation of the data.

It's the usage and access to that data that is the issue.

Cameras can take all the video they want, personally I don't have a problem,..... so that it's only accessed through specific public and approved methods, for designated reasons, and to regulated agency's only.

99% of that accumulated data should never be accessed and should be routinely deleted.

That's my concern. That some large percentage of that 99% will be accessed or mined in some way. Here in the states, we have seen just that happen and continue to happen.

Fine. Then I dont want to hear any whining in this thread about how fantastic it is we have no gun areas and how gun ownership should be restricted.

As far as the cameras go, If they guy had killed some innocent little boy or girl those fricken cameras would have prevented nothing.

Why? Why? Why in the world would you chose to mutate this thread into a platform for you're political agenda? I just don't understand. :(

Because he is an instigator. This thread is not about guns but he tries to turn it into one. He should be reported for doing this, its not the first time either.

I used today's technology to download an image off the internet using satellites orbiting the earth from a server whose location is unknown to me somewhere in the world. I saved it on my phone, I then sent the image back out to the satellites, had it relayed back to my sisters phone. I did that simply because I didn't want to get off the couch and walk over to the chair she was sitting in.

That's where today's technologies are at.

Also global warming isn't real, Jesus was black, and being gay is a choice.

I know of plenty of people that should not have a gun. Just like I know there are plenty of people that are ripe to abuse the super-like powers of all-out surveillance. No thanks. My hat may be next to Silverleaf's and I'm right behind him.

Its nice to have such technology but do you ever notice that when every you hear of a robbery and they show the video from the store its such poor quality? I think even with all the technology for cams and such the one kink in the whole plan is the store that buys el cheapo cams :)

@SilverLeaf , Yes its been what 5 days? I came down sick with something and looked at the cigar I was smoking and just went "Blah!" and decided right there to quit.

@NYJimbo - Im not an instigator. Just happen to jump in here guns-a-blazing! Sorry. I will go elsewhere and exit this thread.
