[SOLVED] The debate is officially over. LOL

Ha. Awesome. To add to the fun, both of these sources disagree. From the stupid peanut butter maker:

"the companies declare that GIF is pronounced with a hard g. Jif is still pronounced the proper way with a soft g."

And, from the inventor himself,:

I think I'll (continue to) side with the inventor. :p

It’s all in fun but the reason why people disagree is that people tend to read it as a hard G. Even the inventor uses the g for the hard sound and j for the softer one.

It's pronounced with a hard G and I refuse to accept anything else!

Seriously, I've never heard a single person in real life pronounce it JIF.
Same here. Can't say it ever occurred to me to pronounce it any other way.

Jif is a lemony cleaning product ... or at least it WAS, until someone had the bright idea to rebrand it as Cif (apparently pronounced Siff, not Kiff). Bloody stupid name.

And don't even get me started on 'Snickers' .... WTF was wrong with 'Marathon'? Who wants to buy a chocolate bar that sounds like women's underwear!?

Well, the 'G' stands for 'Graphic' - definitely a hard G - so I can't see why anyone would use a soft G pronunciation.

Because that is the way it was created -

"Most people pronounced it like this for years, until Steve Wilhite, the man who invented the GIF, threw his opinion into the ring. Steve said he deliberately wanted his creation to sound similar to the american peanut butter brand Jif."

It's been 'Snickers' here since forever. The branding team that decided on a different name for UK probably did so for exactly this reason. I'm sure they've long been fired/downsized in the name of profits.

Rather insular of him...

In the US a Marathon Bar was this:

But they stopped making them.

That looks a lot like a Curly Wurly ...

Not sure if they're still widely available here but I ate a fair few Curly Wurly bars as a kid.

Incidently, we don't generally use the word 'candy' in the UK. They're usually referred to here as 'sweets' or 'toffees'.
