Temp User Profile for all accounts including new ones

So a computer came in with the user account loading a temp user profile.

I have seen this before and thought if the hard drive is ok (Which it is) then I can just do a few changes in the registry as that usually works.

Didn't work, so I saw that the user only had a few documents and decided to make a entire new account and just transfer the data. Well the new account loaded a temp profile also. I made a few more with the same result and about 1 in 10 tries it actually loads the proper profile.

I have done a SFC, CHKDSK, full malware scan and Mem test also system restore doesn't have any restore points.

Also just found out a friend of hers re imaged it from the recovery partition because it was doing the same thing before.

No matter how many different fixes I try it will just load the temp profile on next reboot.

Any ideas?

Ive seen this at work when we install a Windows 7 image but don't change the product key.

I did mean to write the solution just was a bit busy.

After I did the CHKDSK the report didn't show any errors but I looked at the system restore window again and there were all of the restore points that weren't there before.

I select one of the older ones and it went through successfully. I installed all of the windows updates again and the system tested fine after multiple reboots. I say it was a dodgy update because the CHKDSK didn't repair the temp profile thing.

I've come across something similar with a duff update. It upsets the profile so windows (bless it), renames the registry entry with a BAK suffix.

It's a case of delving into the registry and renaming it back.

Sometimes it manifests itself as a "User profile service failed the login" message when trying to login.

I just wrestled with this problem over the weekend, and none of the fixes in that article worked, but this one was the most promising. Too bad there was no ProfileGuid key in the registry. Finally ended up just restoring to factory default and re-did the Windows updates and restored the user data from backup.

Customer says if it happens again, she'll trash the PC. Had a Sony XP system for 8 years with no problems and recently upgraded to an HP Win7 system. Not impressed so far with the upgrade.
