I feel quite blessed to live and do business in a country that has a simple 10% tax rate, applicable to everything a computer retailer is likely do, and all retail prices are quoted inclusive of GST.

In trying to internationalize ShopManager as much as possible, I come as I inevitably must to the issue of Taxation.

What I would like to know, is how your Country/State calculates it's tax. The following information would be most appreciated :)

  • Country/State
  • Tax Rate(s)
  • Prices Tax Inclusive, or Tax added
  • Anything else that is applicable to your country/state.

The day the globe goes to a universal currency and tax system will be the happiest day of my life!

You're asking for sales tax, correct?

Alameda County, CA, USA: 9.75%
Labor is not taxed, only products are taxed

Unfortunately, every county in California may have a different tax rate....

Here's the first suggestion in a long line to come Robert ;)

I don't know if you already do this, but in the admin panel why not allow a custom tax rate, and furthermore if you have and inventory, service, etc. page give an option to add another tax, for example in New York I believe there is a "Sugar" tax now on all soda, candies, sweets, etc.

For sales tax you might as well go ahead and have the option of setting it then have a check mark by the invoice items for "is this taxeable?" with the default being yes.

Marshall, Texas: 8.25%
(Texas each city has a different sales tax rate, part goes to state, part goes to city)

The current plan is, configurable from the admin panel:
  • Tax Name
  • Tax Rates (Parts, Labour, General)
  • Applicable State
  • Prices inclusive or exclusive

When inventory is introduced down the track each product will be configured as taxable or not.

Adding an extra tax only on specific products.... Something to mull over! :)

Here in Houston, Texas the Tax rate is 8.25% (flat) But in Channelview, TX (like 10 miles away) it is 6.25% for the State and 2% for the City for a total of 8.25% (two taxes). But they are in the same County (Harris)
No Labor is taxed unless it is consulting (like going to help someone buy a computer). And All parts are taxed.

The replies so far are greatly appreciated! So far, I've got...

  • Separate tax rates for parts/labour
  • Tax inclusive or exclusive prices
  • Charge tax for certain localities only
  • Tax-free customers (option to not charge tax to certain customers)

Is there anything else that would need to be added to work for your tax systems?

In the uk, we have VAT, instead of tax, and this is currently at 20%, but knowing our government it may change again in a few short months.

Are your prices typically including tax or is tax added on top of quoted prices?

In UK anybody who is registered for VAT is obliged to advertise the VAT .
But when you look at any prices you see:
- Inc. VAT
- Plus VAT
and it can be in small print, making it hard to notice :)
I guess it makes it more confusing, but we got used to it.

Why the hell doesn't the US do that? Here, taxes are so complicated that the time it takes to do them it worth more than the money paid.

I'm in Texarkana, Ar. But I also serve Texas.

We have different tax rates based on the state, county and city. and not all items are taxable in all states. For instance a virus removal is not taxable in texas, but is in Arkansas.

This is actually why I have nto bought ShopManager, even though I've seen good reviews here. I've been scared it was not set up to handle US taxes.

I need to be able to pull, yearly, monthly. and quarterly sales tax records for City, County, and State. Even though I pay the states, they are me how much for each county and City. I need support for 4 states, (AR, TX, OK, LA) and many many more cities and and 4-5 counties.

I am using quickbooks as my POS now. I have different items set with different tax rates.
I can also make each item temporary non-taxable for church sales and etc if needed as well.

I assume you cry yourself to sleep at night? I know I would if I had to deal with that on a daily basis :p

Do you need to apply different taxes depending on where your customer is, or is it based on where your business is? Just trying to get my head around it...

That should be easy enough to do - reporting is simple ;) I would need to add a 'county' field for each customer... I shall mull that one over.

I was considering an option to have tax-free customers, and of course taxed/non-taxed products (the inventory system is a little ways off yet).

Already posted in this topic, but forgot to leave my taxes.
