Imagemanager will tell you if the chain is broken when it attempts to consolidate, where it would need the dependencies. Typically what you can do is just remove the bad file and any files after and run a new incremental backup and it will create a self-healing incremental. If you have a bad image file and you are not sure if its apart of the chain there is a command line program in the shadowprotect directory called image.exe that will output the file chain based on the file you tell it to look at. That way you know if it can simply be deleted or if you need to heal the chain from that point on.
Its not something that just happens though through the fault of the software. Image files can get corrupted for a variety of reasons which is mainly the fault of the storage device, either the file system, disks, or memory, etc. Thats why IMO its important to not use cheap desktop components for BDR devices.
