Went to disk utilities in Recovery and formatted HD
connected to wireless
Put in Apple ID to begin install of Lion it said about 2 hours
24 hours later it still says 2 hours
is this because it connected to wifi I read somewhere its best to do it wired
only wifi is available

Personally I re-partition the drive rather than just format. And yes, wired is much more reliable than wireless for doing Internet recoveries. Also another reason to keep images for each OS on hand. It's rare these days but on occasion one can still run into someone with DSL.

What I did is erase drive

I think if you don't erase partition you get an over install and it keeps data, it needs to be completely wiped

I could bring it home and do it but she will not tell me her Apple ID off site

She also has a MacBook that is being handed down I told her I could create new user then securely delete her

and not do reinstall because of only wifi

I was going to do clean install since she was having problems with Adobe reader with 10.7.5

is this common,

Machines that shipped with 10.6 or earlier did not have recovery partitions. They all shipped with recovery media.

Beginning with 10.7 Apple changed their software delivery model by implementing the App Store. Apple had one last update for 10.6, 10.6.8, which installed the App Store. Machines that did pre 10.6 did not have a direct upgrade path to 10.7 and higher. If they did not upgrade to 10.6.8 it was a clean install.

For a time they did have 10.7 USB sticks in the stores. I think you can still by 10.6 and 10.7 online from Apple.

Beginning with 10.7 machines Apple implemented a recovery function that ran from firmware. Machines prior to that could be upgraded to 10.7 and beyond. But the recovery function was put on a HD partition, so if the drive is replaced you have to have recovery media.

As far as Acrobat issues. It's bloatware. The built in Preview app runs much better and allows you to edit PDF's.

What model MacBook Pro is it?
Could have a problem with the HDD cable, pretty sure I've seen something similar, with OS X taking forever to install.
Replaced HDD cable and all is well again.
