So, i get a call from a client telling me he his usb ports no longer work. I am thought this would be a "straight forward" fix. If there is such a thing.

I take a look at his PC and the is the yellow ! (code 10) in device manager for the "standard enhanced pci to usb host controller". I tried the uninstall reinstall method thinking that would do the trick but alas no dice.

His PC had all sorts of other issues, ie viruses malware and just generally slow. I decided to go the backup, format then reinstall windows route. After the fresh install of windows I was hoping this would correct the usb problem but I am still getting the same error in device manger
yellow ! (code 10)

The PC has windows xp pro sp3 installed and i updated the motherboards (Intel® Desktop Board D101GGC) chipset drivers hoping that would do the trick but that didn't word either.

Bytheway I also checked in the bios to make sure it was enabled and of couse it was.

Any Ideas?

May be TDSServ.sys

Go to the device manager, enable show hidden devices look through non-plug and play devices for TDSServ. Uninstall it, then clean using MBAM.

Also could be that the USBStor.sys or USBStore.inf file have permissions set to deny users. I've seen that happen through malware.

Edit: Nevermind. I didn't catch where you said you formatted and reinstalled. Sounds like he may have a bad motherboard or something. Maybe the physical ports are shorted. I'd disconnect all unecessary hardware and see if you can narrow it down.

Thanks for the response. I looked through the hidden devices in device manager but did not find what u suggested. As for the 2 usb files and running mbam well i just installed a fresh copy of windows so it cant be malware.

I am afraid it is a motherboard issue, guess i will have to go the usb pci card route. Thanks

check to see if the USB ports are damaged and shorting against the internal ground of the port. I have seen this sometimes and it causes goofy symptoms. If these are front mounted USB ports, then just unplug them from the headers.
