Anyone using SSL certificates on your website?

I've heard they can increase your Google ranking. Just curious if anyone has proven this to be beneficial, especially if not doing e-commerce. Guessing they wouldn't hurt, just not sure if its worth the $75-100/year.

I bought an SSL Cert a couple of years ago and just recently implemented it. Hasn't made any difference to my rankings.
Lets Encrypt are giving them free now, as was mentioned.

It will definitely make a difference. You can get a free SSL using Cloudflare as well, can be easier to get going than Let's Encrypt depending on your setup - and you get the extra security, speed etc features that Cloudflare offers on the free package.

Doesn't help from what I have seen. I do SEO everyday and I'm ranked high for my keywords because I put in the time. I like that is says "secure" though in case anyone is wondering.

It has been acknowledged that it's a factor in Google's algorithm.

Google, and Bing both negatively rank pages that don't have an https option.

Of course if you want to see your page rank plummet, stop paying them for their little extortion game. You'll vanish off the radar so hard you'll think you never existed.

We started rolling them out to websites a few months back. Running a Cpanel/WHM server and use the built in AutoSSL feature with Comodo certificates. Completely automated and the certificates are free - so why not?

CPanel dev's have suggested several times in blogs their future intention to drop support for services on non-secure ports. This means webmail will be forced onto https for everyone... so certs are going to be essential when that happens.

As for search engine ratings? Can't say we have noticed a difference but I think going forward it will become more and more essential.

Been on an SSL for a year or two now. Cloudflare gave them out on my host and so I didn't really have to do anything or pay anything - just hit the I accept button.

The question you need to ask yourself is do you really need https? If you've a flow of traffic on your site and you want to keep the comminucation between your site and the customer safe, then https is certainly an avenue to take. No point having it if its not needed.

Small knit pick, but it needs said.

SSL has nothing to do with protecting the data as it transits between the web server and the browser. The TLS protocol does that, via whatever encryption cipher is negotiated. What SSL does is authenticate the web server to the client as a trusted source for information.

That's why SSL is so important for Google. It isn't about encryption, it's about authentication. This web server has trusted data, as trusted by this certificate authority and associated chain of trust.

Ultimately ended up rolling with a free Cloudflare plan. Thanks for the recommendation.
