I'm trying to install the sound drivers on a Compaq Presario 6000 with a fresh install of XP Home SP3. The drivers install without a problem but anything come out the speakers sounds like its underwater. I understand this is a setting in the SoundMAX Control Panel. As if it wasn't bad enough that it's set to "underwater" by default, the Sound Max Settings Panel doesn't appear in Control Panel so I can't change it.

Whenever I try to reinstall the drivers using Setup.exe, it exits with an error message saying "Driver Not Found! Reboot your system, then run this setup again" but it just does the same thing over and over. I know I'm using the correct drivers for the machine and I've tried 4 or 5 different versions but each one does the same.

Anyone come across this before? The customer said it worked before I reinstalled windows. I've spent about as much time as I'm willing to spend on such a crap problem, that I've said I'll go out to him and only charge him for a new sound card if I can't find any more info by tomorrow. Any help appreciated.

PS - Why is the soundmax background during the installation so ****?

EDIT - I've just read the sound could be disabled in the BIOS and this has helped alot of people with the same issue. Surely I wouldn't be getting any sound at all if this were the case? The questions is, do I try and talk the old chap through configuring the BIOS over the phone.

I tried that one :(

Good news though - the customer rang me up and said he just switched the computer on and the sound is now fine. I restarted it before ending the remote session and it was still playing up, so I'm not sure what happened. Job's a goodun though :D
