I had a lady bring in a Sony Vaio vgn-cs215j three days ago. Her dog had knocked it to the floor while charging and her dc jack was broken. I replaced the dc jack, put it back together, let her see it boot it up, she paid and was on her way. She called back the next day to say that her screen wouldn't work and wanted to bring it back. I turned it on and you can very faintly see the vaio logo but nothing after that. It does post and it does go to desktop as I hear the start up sound. I tried an external monitor and no dice there. I feel pretty confident that it's not the video adapter since it does post, but other than that I am confused. Any suggestions?

THANKS!!

sounds like it may be the backlight,

Yup.. if you can see the image but it's very faint, it's almost certainly the backlight or inverter. An inverter can be swapped pretty effortlessly, but if it's the backlight do yourself a favor and order a new screen. The last backlight I tried to deal with was about as thick as a pencil lead and it broke as soon as I tried to put it in... it's not worth the hassle.

[EDIT]
Hm.. I just re-read your post, and you say it doesn't work on an external monitor?? Did you try FN/F5? If it's an inverter or backlight it should work on an external monitor.
