Hi i have had a sony vaio vgn-cr353 brought to me. It keeps powering off, it stays on for about an hour then turns off. After that every 10 mins or so. Everytime there is no error message. I have tried a different power supply, known working ram, and the fan seems to be working and free from dust. I beleive its overheating as it takes a while for it to turn off. Please give me something else to check!!!

Has anyone else had similar issues, or does anybody know what i can try next??

Hi thanks for reply! everytime it shuts down i get these errors on the event log: the parallel port driver faild to start, faild to load the plug in module. (56f9312c-c989-4e04-8c23-299dee3a36f5 error code 0x80042019), and the previous system shutdown was un expected.

no error messages when it shutsdown i.e no bsod.

it did but seems to be ok at the minute.

And yes i have replaced the thermo paste.

I have also tried taking the battery out.

Here are the event logs from the last shut down.

Hi What's up,

If you think it's overheating you will want to watch the temp either thru the OS or with a thermal gun. If it's not overheating you could try booting to a Linux OS via a usb and see if it does the same turning off, at least you will know if it's Windows, or the HDD that's bum.

I find when a lot of laptops overheat I re-apply the thermal paste on the cpu, and chipset. Clean it off nice first. Fans are cheap enough to just change if you even think there is a problem with it. Overheating will just shut down the laptop so it could be that. I have an unbuntu linux on a usb but there are tons of em out there. Others would probably know better than me which linux is good and which aren't. I figure if you can boot in linux and you don't get the shutdown issue than it's not overheating and is probably Windows or your HDD is going bad, corrupt etc.

Update.

This is what i have tried: run speedfan temperature seems to stay around 45 - 50 degrees, and when it got to 69 degrees went back to 45 - 50 pretty quick. So ruling out overheating. And reapplied thermal paste. And cleaned out fan and vents, although was not dusty really.

Ran hard drive checker no errors found. Found that harddrive was full up 220GB had 900MB left, removed some of the customers films and put on my external drive now has around 25GB free.

Ran memtest no errors found. Moved ram to other slot. Tried it with another known good ram, no joy.

Tried with different power supply, and with battery in and out, no joy.

Run mbam and sas, mbam found and removed 3 trojans, Sas found nothing. Uninstalled and reinstalled all drivers, using sony recovery software.

Cleaned Registry and installed all windows updates.

Run on parted magic, backed up documents, ran for 3 hours with no problems.

Also run with power management turn off, no joy.

Updated the bios, no joy.

Opened it up no damaged wires or anything suspect to talk about.

Another Update.

Customer had it back for 3 weeks working fine now started turning off again.

Decided to use the sony recovery partition, gets half way through and turns off. Is it a bum HDD?? Again no error messages or bsod.!

Now done a clean install using a disc, instead of the recovery partition.

Installed fine. Run for a little while then turned of again. Couldn't get updates and drivers installed before it turned off. Now quoting the customer on a HDD, and try another clean install on a new HDD.

To me, it sounds like you have a chipset issue. Probably needs a reflow/reball. I perform reflows on mostly HP dv series laptops... and Sony laptops are 2nd on that list!

would that only do that whilst its running on vista. As i can run it on a Linux system from a boot disc with no problems. Thought HDD as whilst running from a boot disc i have no problems. It literally powers off at random intervals whilst booted to the os.

Certainly try another hard drive and see if it helps first.

I have seen Linux distro's work on failing computers in which windows would not work.
I may be talking out of my butt here, but here is what I have gathered:

Concerning Linux Distro's:
1. Linux has a better error handling and recovery scheme.
2. Booting from a CD bypasses the need to use the MOBO's hard drive controller, hence, if that is the problem then that may be why the Distro does OK.
3. In many cases Linux doesn't use the correct driver for the hardware, but rather a generic driver that works fine. In many cases these generic drivers do not "stress" the hardware and/or are unable to use and access the "higher functions" of the hardware. Your hardware may only exhibit problems when working "fully" and at higher bandwidths.

hi thanks for your help!! it was indeed the mobo. Customer is now thinking of getting a new laptop.
