Absolutely, it was. It can easily take 5+ minutes for a modern computer running Windows 10 with a 5400rpm hard drive to even boot up enough to be usable with "fast startup" turned off. "Fast startup" is just hibernation and never turning your computer off, so it's a really bad idea to have it on. Windows XP was totally usable 60 seconds after hitting the power button on that old Micron laptop, and it was 100% started up in less than 90 seconds. I know because laptop battery life sucked balls back then so I had to turn it off between classes and give myself enough time for it to boot up so I could open up Office and get to work again once I got to my next class. But in no way is was it even remotely "faster" than a modern computer
Oh, and just so you don't ask me this, there was a huge period of time in the middle of the day that I didn't use the laptop. For example, I'd use it in science class to take notes, but then I'd go to lunch, PE, math, etc. before hitting English and needing to turn it on again. The battery life was so awful that even though I had 3x batteries I could barely make it through two classes. If I put it to sleep for the 3 or 4 hours between classes I'd lose 30% of my battery, so I had to shut it off.
I even ran Photoshop PS2 on it at one point and it was fine. Of course, I wasn't editing photos any larger than 1024x768. Though I will point out that it was a "lite" version of Photoshop that I'd pirated. I have no idea how well it would have handled the "real" version of Photoshop.
After that laptop I got a Gateway Solo 2550. It had a 500Mhz Pentium III processor, 128MB of RAM, and a 9.6GB hard drive. It absolutely blew my little Micron away. I eventually upgraded it to 384MB of RAM so I could upgrade to Photoshop PS3 (also a pirated "lite" version).
I'm pretty sure I was using SP3 right before retiring the laptop and I didn't notice any difference in speed after I upgraded it. Though I don't think I used it very long with SP3.Also XP got a lot "heavier" as it was service packed, esp SP2
