Shaving method - Cream, Gel, Foam, Soap, Lotion or electric? What do you prefer

I have sensitive skin and found when I would use a 3 or 4 blade razor it would actually shave too close and I would end up breaking out. Now I use a Gillette 2 blade disposable razor with Neutrogena Shave Cream. Works great.

Most of the breaking out/razor burn issues are caused by not enough lubrication. A good shave soap is the answer, spray foams and the like are not that great a choice.

Also, if you massage an oil into your face like vit. e or almond oil and then apply the shave soap/cream you will notice that the razor glides across your face like a dream and the razor burn/breakouts will be nonexistent.

Check out a good DE razor forum and you will see great shaving techniques. Before I started DE shaving, I used to dread it as I always ended up with breakouts, and an electric never got close enough and would irritate my neck.

I shave once a week these days, sometimes two and rarely 3. But before, when I was in the military, I had to shave twice a day to maintain the standard. I get a 5'o clock shadow at noon. So my skin was pretty raw. Like many said, depends on what you use. I learned to avoid anything that gave off a scent, those extra chemicals enhanced the skin irritation. Using hot water will dry out your skin, causing more skin irritation. Use warm water in my opinion.

Honestly, I went through various creams, soaps, gels, etc., and rarely saw a difference when it came down to actually shaving the irritation afterwards. I have to becareful though, the skin on my neck is damaged from years of against the grain shaving to help me last longer in between shaves. I've been using the Ogallala Unscented Shaving Soap for awhile now, and let me just say, it has been great. Use warm water and this soap and you should be good at the start.

The razor means a lot to me as well. I've gone through electrics, which only pull at my facial hair cause it is so thick. Cheap disposables, one and done...Mach 3 was eh...But now I'm using the Fusion Power Razor and it's been alright so far. I love the little trimmer too. Because I don't shave very often these days, I toss my blades after two weeks, regardless.

After I shave, I use The Art of Shaving After-Shave Balm, again, unscented. It's worth the price tag in my opinion. Before you go to bed each night, use an unscented lotion (Lubriderm is my choice) on your face. You might get some breakouts here and there, to combat this, take a shower before you go to bed, then apply lotion, and sleep.

Remember, the key here is keep it unscented. My skin has been making a really good recovery these last 2 years. I hope to be shaving semi-regularly again soon (like 3 times a week at least).

@ LifelineIT -

On the Personnas; Is this the same company that makes the Personnas in the red package? The red package ones I've used seemed to be very dull, and I've had a hard time with them.

I've been out of the loop for awhile and have not heard of the Israeli ones - I may have to give them a try.

I honestly don't know. I know that they are NOT the same as the ones that come in the red box at someplace like Wal-Mart. (although the thread below may say differently.)

I used Feathers for probably the better part of 5 years before I tried them, and I really like the Feathers, no doubt. I shave about once a week, and my hair is HARDCORE thick, so it's one-shave-and-out for me regardless, whether it's a mach 3 or a disposable bic or a DE. At least with the DE I can actually get the hair out of it, unlike with a multi-blade disposable. When I shave more than once a week, I get 2-3 out of a DE blade.

I've tried the Irish Derbys and tons of them, and I'm happy with either Feather or Personna. Here's a whole thread of comparison Personna vs Feather. Here's another.

I don't know a lot about this kinda stuff, but I am educated in some areas.

I have sensitive skin and I break out easily, with red bumps and rashes... not pleasant. I've been shaving with the Gillette Fusion razor for about ten years now and I can say for sure that it does a good job.

In my opinion the most important things are to prep your skin well before shaving and to let the razor do the work instead of forcing the blade into your skin. Shave WITH the grain, and try to avoid anything with alcohol or scents.

I've gathered that it is best to lather up with a good shaving soap or cream and let it sit on your face for a while before shaving. This helps to soften the hair and make it easier to cut, making you less likely to use unnecessary force to shave.

The last tip is to only use sharp blades. To make your razor blades last longer, ensure they are fully clean by removing all hair from the razor post shaving. Then rinse the blade with an ounce or two of isorproply alcohol and dry it using a hair drier (or towel if you don't have one, do not "SHAVE" your towel!!!)

The number one thing that wears a blade out is leaving them dirty and wet. The blades micro rust and and this is what causes them to perform poorly.

I don't know that I'm brave enough to shave with a straight edge!

Like some of you, I hate to shave. I would have a full linux beard if I could get away with it, but have to settle for a goatee instead.

I have recently discovered a miracle product for shaving though....I just use whichever disposable happens to be on sale, and usually keep them far too long, but the secret is .Dr. Bronner's peppermint castile soap. (I'm sure other flavors may work just as well, but the peppermint is so refreshing). Hands down the smoothest, easiest shave I have ever had. Pure aloe gel makes a great aftershave as well.

DE for me. I used the 3-blade/4-blade/5-blade titanium cost more than gold razors for awhile, but the cost was just getting ridiculous. I finally bought a DE set and a sample set of blades. It was no looking back for me. The difference was amazing. There was a learning curve as I had to learn the various directions or grain on my face. The 'grain' doesn't always go in the same direction all over your whole face. It goes in various directions in different areas. I didn't know this until I started using a DE. Once I learned how to adjust to this, man...talk about a smooth shave that felt great. I actually look forward to shaving now.

I have found that the Dorco blades are best for me. Not as sharp as Feathers, but I get a better shave from them. The Feathers leave me a little irritated.

If you use the expensive Fusion blades or similar products from other brands, you should try the DE. The savings alone is enough for me. And after the learning curve, the shave itself is so much better. My opinion anyway.

This guy "gets it", especially about how the grain grows in all different directions. :D

Funny how different blades work for different people. Dorco's never did much for me. Aside from the Feathers, I have good success with Shark blades and Gillette Wilkinson's.

I've always been electric, never used a blade on my face in my whole life.

My girlfriend shaves my head once a week with soap and a disposable razor.

Does anyone know if you can electric shave your head? I'd like to keep it as shiny and bald as possible by electric shaving every day :)

I have been shaving my head for about a dozen years now and I bought an electric shaver that you can use in the shower ( forget the name now but at the time it was the best rated electric shaver for using in the shower ) and it worked but you will just not get the same results as you will with a razor.

I always had a slight "shadow" using it and it was supposed to give you the closest shave of any shavers on the market at that time. So I use a blade... sometimes Mach 3's or my HeadBlade razor ( which I love as well but cant always find refills locally )

No shaving at the moment. Just touch up around the edge of my beard with a trimmer. I had been using a Gillette Mach3 shaver & shaving gel 1x or 2x a week and electric trim rest of the week. Skin can't take more than a few shaves a week.
