We have a HP 280 G2 desktop with an OEM Samsung 256GB SDD that we need to secure erase. We started to setup the desktop for a customer but are now going to have to put it back into stock so want to secure erase it. Normally we would use DBAN but apparently its not suitable for SSD's and the Samsung Secure Erase ultily wont work on it as its OEM.

Any idea?

Do you have parted magic? If not, pick up a copy, I think one time download is like 9 bucks. They've got utilities for password reset, erase drives etc. Here's a guide how to erase drives with it.

I think as I said you can do a one time download for like 9 bucks.

I have used the version on UBCD before but not purchased it.

Ok thats a good option thanks, before i buy has anyone got any better/free ideas?

That was just the first thing I found on my phone lol. I will say I find I use it for more than just that. I use it for testing hard drives, ram, password resets all that type of thing too. Pretty handy as a general utility imo, and can boot uefi systems.

If you want free, CCleaner offers a 'secure' disk wiper - no idea how secure it actually is, though, but it does work on SSDs

Did you already put customer data on it? If not just image it and move on.

We joined to the domain over VPN and setup and synced the users email account so although very small there is customer data on it.

Another thought: If you erase/delete files with a TRIM-enabled system, isn't that supposed to make them pretty much unrecoverable anyway?
